The San Antonio Spurs (18-57) are currently in last place in the Western Conference. However, in a few of their recent games, they have started to hit a bit of a groove. They are a young team with much promise and a solid future. Unfortunately, as they hit this grove, two of their key players were injured. Both Devin Vassell and Jeremy Sochan will be out for the rest of the season. There is a good chance the Spurs won’t do well in their last few games without them. They will probably have to lean heavily on Victor Wembanyama to win.
Bad Ending to a Tough Season
Devin Vassell and Jeremy Sochan were both drafted by the San Antonio Spurs. Vassell was drafted in 2020, while Sochan was drafted in 2022. Also, both players were in the top 15 first-round picks. They also have both struggled to break out in the league. For a while it seemed like the Spurs made the wrong decisions when drafting them. Now, Sochan will need ankle Surgery and Vassell will need to stay of his injured foot.
This season, Vassell is hitting his all-time high in average, scoring 19.5 points. He also is averaging 3.8 rebounds and 4.1 assists. This is Sochan’s second season, and he is averaging 11.6 points, 6.4 rebounds, and 3.4 assists, which is also an improvement. There have also been flashes of Sochan getting 20 points in games. With a good recovery and readiness for next season, they will both be key players.
Greg Popovich Helping Young Stars Grow
The San Antonio Spurs have one of the greatest coaches in the NBA, Gregg Popovich, leading them. There have been struggles getting the ball rolling this season, but it seems like they might be over a giant hump. Victor Wembanyama is being utilized better, and his teammates are playing better ball. It looks like the Spurs can finally compete with NBA teams. Yes, they are still in last place but this season is showing more hope for the future.
What Should San Antonio Spurs Fans Hope For This Season
Without Vassell and Sochan, the season might be over for the San Antonio Spurs. Obviously, there was no shot at the play-in or playoffs this year, but ending on a high note would have been nice. Unless their bench plays remarkable basketball for the rest of the season, this probably won’t happen. For now, Spurs fans should keep their eyes on the draft, as the Spurs could end up with two top-ten picks depending on where the Toronto Raptors pick lands. This draft will add more young, solid talent to their arsenal.
