San Antonio Spurs Rookie Stephon Castle In Great Company

San Antonio Spurs

San Antonio Spurs Guard Stephon Castle has had a stellar rookie season. His performance has him on a list with three of the best point guards in the National Basketball Association. Castle has 1,000 points, 250 rebounds, 250 assists, and 70 steals this year.

The last four rookie guards to put up those numbers in their rookie season are Trae Young, Luka Doncic, Cade Cunningham, and Castle. Castle was drafted No. 4 overall by the San Antonio Spurs on the heels of a National Championship at UConn. Castle has picked up right where he left off during his first season in the NBA. He is a prohibitive favorite to be named the NBA Rookie of the Year. Castle is averaging 14.4 points, 3.6 rebounds, and 3.9 assists. Will he be able to finish his rookie season on a high note?

San Antonio Spurs Season Summary

This season will be one remembered for losses to key personnel. Head Coach Gregg Popovich suffered a mild stroke on November 2. Even though he is expected to make a full recovery, his NBA coaching future is unknown. Star Center Victor Wembanyama was shut down in February due to blood clots. He underwent surgery to address the issue and is also expected to return for the start of next season.

Marquee trade deadline addition Point Guard De’Aaron Fox has not played since March 12 after undergoing season-ending surgery on his pinkie finger. The trio of Wembanyama, Castle, and Fox is formidable, but they only played a handful of games together. This triumvirate will need to wait until next season to build chemistry.

Final Thoughts

Castle’s historic rookie season has been one of the few positives for the San Antonio Spurs. The team was supposed to be an NBA Play-In Tournament threat, but a host of injuries made that impossible. Castle and Wembanyama will seek to be San Antonio’s cornerstone players for years to come.
