After drafting Victor Wembanyama as the No. 1 overall pick in the 2023-24 NBA Draft, the San Antonio Spurs are in a great position to add some much-needed help for Wembanyama in the 2024 NBA Draft.
The San Antonio Spurs have the fourth and eighth picks of the upcoming draft. While this draft isn’t as full of great prospects as in recent years, there is still great value and promise from a 4th and 8th pick, if they can get the right player for the team.
Where will San Antonio turn?
Who San Antonio Spurs Should Draft With Pick Four
The San Antonio Spurs have many players to choose from with the fourth pick of the draft. They can take several approaches to selecting the right player. The Spurs could pick who they think is the next best player left in the draft to add some trade value and overall value to the team. Then, they could wait and hope to find the right fit for their team with the eighth pick.
However, this strategy could be risky. They might not get a player who fits well with their needs and the system they are building. The best option for the San Antonio Spurs is to secure a player with their fourth pick who they know will fit best with the team they are building around Victor Wembanyama.
The Spurs need a point guard the most, particularly one who can run the offense around Victor Wembanyama while involving other players as well. This is where Nikola Topic comes into the conversation.
Who is Nikola Topic?
Nikola Topic is a 6’6″ point guard from Serbia. He has been compared to Goran Dragic and Josh Giddey. Topic will fit in well alongside Wembanyama. He is a playmaker and highly skilled at driving to the basket. He would be able to run a great offensive scheme of pick and rolls with Wembanyama.
Coming from a European basketball style of play, he knows how to play as a team and pass the ball. This was something the San Antonio Spurs missed last season. No one was able to feed Wembanyama the ball and elevate him to his full potential.
With Topic running the offense, Wembanyama will be able to score more efficiently and easily. Not only that but Topic can also be a threat on offense. He is a great finisher. Ultimately, the combination of Topic and Wembanyama will make the Spurs more effective and open the floor up for other players, and Topic will be there to dish it out to those other players.
Who San Antonio Spurs Should Draft With Pick Eight?
It is hard to say who the San Antonio Spurs should take with the eighth pick because several players could fall in the draft. However, one player who will probably be available as the eighth pick is Rob Dillingham.
Rob Dillingham is a 6’1″ point guard who played for Kentucky in college. He is similar to Lou Williams and Bones Hyland. He has a lot of diverse weapons on the offensive end of the floor. That is why he would be a great fit alongside Topic and Wembanyama.
Topic and Dillingham would rotate in a similar manner as Shai Gilgeous-Alexander and Josh Giddey do on the Thunder. Dillingham can create offense on his own, but his perimeter threat is even more important. For example, if Topic and Wembanyama’s pick and rolls break down a defense, then Dillingham could be left open on the perimeter. If good defense is played, Dillingham can still keep the offense going with his ball-handling and shot-creating abilities.
Ultimately, Gregg Popovich could use Topic, Dillingham, and Wembanyama to move the ball and play in a similar but better style than former Spurs Tony Parker, Manu Ginobili, and Tim Duncan.
