Sam Northeast Sets Up Glamorgan’s First Win | 2024 VB

Sam Northeast sets up Glamorgan's first win

Glamorgan 183 for 7 (Mills 4-33, Northeast 61*) destroyed Sussex 158 for 6 (Cole 69*, Crane 2-22) by 25 runs.

Glamorgan secured their first win of the 2024 Vitality Blast with a 25-run victory against Sussex in Cardiff. Sam Northeast’s 61* helped to set a winning target.

Tymal Mills took four wickets to help reduce Glamorgan to 183 for seven from their 20 overs. But Glamorgan showed a good bowling power. Their much-improved fielding effort from their previous encounter in this league against Surrey also defends the target.

Sussex’s James Coles top-scored with a career-best 69 not out. Yet, the rest of the batting order provided little help. Mason Crane was Glamorgan’s standout bowler, taking 2 for 22 from his four overs as Sussex concluded on 158 for 6.

Glamorgan’s Inning Efforts

Not to mention, Glamorgan had to work hard to keep the scoring going due to regular wickets. However, big contributions from all down the order helped them to reach a competitive score. The home team’s powerplay yielded 56 runs for the cost of two wickets, with Chris Cooke and Northeast doing well.

Cooke was gifted a life on 21 when Dan Hughes stumbled while attempting a simple catch off Danny Lamb’s bowling. Mills fired Cooke just as it appeared that Glamorgan might capitalize on this error.

A strong partnership of 68 between Northeast and Colin Ingram appeared to be laying the groundwork for them to assault Sussex’s bowling in the final overs. Mills’ two wickets in two deliveries sent them reeling once again. The first was Ingram, who was bowled off an inside edge after the Marnus Labuschagne. Labuschagne was bowled by a ball with more pace than him.

Mills had Dan Douthwaite caught by Oli Carter for 11 to complete his second four-wicket haul of the campaign. Northeast was there at the finish. With striking the final ball of the innings for six to give Sussex a target of 184. Not an easy target.

Sussex’s Challenging Chase

Sussex started well with a costly over from Tom Bevan. Unfortunately, the first two wickets during the powerplay delayed their progress. Carter and Coles kept the battle alive with a consistent stand of 42. Carter was removed for 33 when Eddie Byrom caught him off Ingram’s bowling.

On the other hand, Glamorgan believed they had dismissed him in the previous over when the umpires ruled that a low catch from Tom Bevan was not taken cleanly. As had been the case throughout the Glamorgan innings, regular wickets required some rebuilding, and three fast wickets saw Sussex move from 73 for 2 to 85 for 5.

Fortunately, Crane applied the brakes just as Sussex needed speed, owing to a brilliant spell in which he did not give a single boundary. Crane’s second wicket came via a superb boundary catch by Labuschagne. He sent the ball back into play to win the wicket of John Simpson.

Coles batted well for his first fifty in T20 cricket, but with little help around him, the required rate increased. Sussex needed 65 runs at the start of the 18th over, which proved too much for them as Glamorgan claimed their first win of the season.
