This morning, the International Olympic Committee formally awarded the 2034 Winter Games to be held in Salt Lake City, Utah. The vote count was 83 in favor, with only 6 in the negative. This has been a long time coming, and some thought that it would be inevitable given that the public approval rating was close to 80% in favor. Since the success of the Olympic games in 2002, the facilities are already available. Once the announcement was made, 3,000 Utahans couldn’t hold back the tears as they celebrated the decision as they gathered at Washington Square in Salt Lake City.
Utah Celebrates The Announcement Of the Olympics 2034 Return
The timing was perfect as Utah celebrates its state Pioneer Day holiday. While most of the state is already enjoying parades, fireworks, rodeos, fairs, and other events, groups are now gathering, cheering, and celebrating the opportunities this will bring.
Before this time, only ten cities worldwide had the privilege of hosting Olympic games more than once, and only two of them were cities in the U.S. Salt Lake will be added to Los Angeles and Lake Placid as repeating hosts.
Twenty years ago, the world watched and wondered if Utah could host the world’s best athletes and feature them on a global stage. With so many variables including budget, volunteers, quality, nationality, language translations, and even scandal accusations threaded the game’s outcome. There haven’t been any doubts this time around.
Looking Ahead To The 2034 Olympics
This triumph is largely due to Fraser Bullock, the CDO of the Salt Lake City-Utah Committee for the Games, who previously served as chief operating officer for the 2002 Winter Games. All the facilities used in the prior Olympics in Utah were preserved and kept up to date, reducing the costs associated with all events.
Utah will face a great deal of differences between the last hosting of the Olympics back in 2002 and what will be coming in ten years. No matter the difference or the difficulty, Utah has proven to exhibit goodwill, and volunteers with wholesome excitement as people from around the globe attend with anticipation.
The Olympics don’t just bring warm faces and friendly competition to the state. The University of Utah’s Kem C. Gardner Policy Institute drafted an eight-page report predicting that the Games had the potential to generate new jobs and generate an economic output of 6.6 billion.
If you also add the impact of the world watching and sending pictures of Utah around the world, the possibilities of what this recognition means are enormous. What this means for businesses big and small, local trades, and cultural exchange opportunities for our five continents to meet peacefully from around the world is priceless.
Now that the vote has been completed, the next order of business is for Governor Spencer Cox to sign the government assurance, which is required by the IOC. This will most likely be completed this evening, keeping the pioneering celebration and the anticipation rolling.
With all this in mind, Bullock stated,
“We’re back! The Games have more power than anything else to bring the world together, to bring the nation together, and to bring communities together. And that is going to be a recurring theme of everything we do over the next ten years.”
This opportunity is a world changer for Utah, and the ten-year gap can’t close soon enough. With the Paris games about to start, the Earth will be watching, and there are bound to be more announcements informing everyone of the upcoming event.
Most sporting events are centered on being competitive, and the best part of the competition is the victor. The Olympics is different as the outcome of the sports is meaningful. All those involved showcase their skills after years of training and devotion while sharing a history of tradition.
