Mo Salah is a name that every football fan knows. He has been a stalwart player at Liverpool FC since his arrival, immediately making an impact on the team. No one will forget his record-breaking season that saw him score 32 goals and provide ten assists in the 2017-2018 season — his first in the Premier League.
He looks to be on track to break even more records, too, with his goal on opening day for the first game of the season for the Reds. If he can continue to score goals and provide assists for his teammates, Liverpool could be in real contention this year for the title.
Salah Scores in Liverpool vs. Ipswich
Ipswich came out hard — and shocked Liverpool FC who were on the back foot for most of the first half. Fans were outraged at halftime when the players went into the dressing room to only have seen a 0-0 draw up until that point, especially from the Liverpool side who was supposed to be in contention for the top three this year.
Liverpool were caught out in the first 45 minutes, unsure of their playing style and how best to break down the ex-Championship side. Should they play more directly, or should they use possession-based football as they did with Jurgen Klopp as manager? The new man in charge, Slot, and the players themselves, all seemed a bit confused.
Plus, new players and injuries caused changes to the lineup from last year that nobody saw coming. Gravenberch played as the #6, a spot that used to be given to Endo or Silva, whereas Jota was given more creative freedom to play in the middle instead of being stuck out on the wing. Nunez remained on the bench. Alexander Arnold became more of a presence in the middle of the field, inverting himself from his fullback role to be more of a playmaker from the center of the park.
Despite being more possession-based and patient in attack, this didn’t seem to suit the players on the field particularly well. Ipswich Town bullied them off the ball and took their chances with counterattacks. However, they turned the game around in the second half. Salah was able to slot a perfect through pass to the on-running Jota, who was able to calmly pass the ball past the Ipswich keeper. Then, just five minutes later in the 65th minute, Salah was able to net one of his own to claim the 2-0 victory against the newly promoted side.
Mo Salah Stats
Last season, Salah had 18 goals and 10 assists for Liverpool — a fantastic year for anyone else, but ‘low’ for Salah himself. Maybe it was because of interchanging roles with the other strikers or being on the bench more at the end of the season. No matter the reason, Salah hopes to reclaim the form of his 2021-2022 season or his 2017-2018 season, where he scored more than 20 goals and provided over ten assists for his teammates.
If he continues like he did on opening day, Salah will be on the path to score more than 175 goals for Liverpool over his tenure. Currently, he sits at a whopping 250 appearances and 156 goals for the Reds.
