The 2024 NBA Summer League has been in full swing, but one Western Conference team recently announced some bad news to the general public. Sacramento Kings rookie, Devin Carter, is reportedly set to undergo shoulder surgery next week, while the Kings are scheduled to compete in Las Vegas, Nevada.
There haven’t been many details surrounding Carter’s upcoming shoulder surgery is specifically for. However, the media reports have been consistent. Carter, 22, is expected to miss the start of the 2024-25 NBA season and will make a full recovery.
Carter, a shooting guard and point guard, needs shoulder surgery. Here are the details on the 22-year-old guard’s surgery and background.
Sacramento Kings Rookie Devin Carter Suffers Setback
Sacramento Kings rookie Devin Carter was drafted 13th overall in the 2024 NBA Draft for a reason. Carter’s a strong point-of-attack defender, whose offensive game blossomed at Providence, where he shot 37.7% from the three-point line and scored 19.7 points per game.
Carter, who stands at 6-foot-3 and weighs 195 pounds, played three seasons of college basketball at South Carolina from 2021-22 and Providence from 2022-24. In his second season at Providence, Carter was named both Big East First Team and Big East Player of the Year.
However, Carter’s budding NBA career was halted due to a similar surgery the Kings’ shooting guard Kevin Huerter underwent during the 2023-24 NBA season.
NBA insider Shams Charania recently tweeted, “Sacramento Kings No. 13 pick Devin Carter is expected to undergo left shoulder surgery next week, sources tell @TheAthletic @Stadium. Carter’s status at the start of next season is in question, but he is fully expected to make a full recovery with no long-term issues.”
Carter’s NBA career is off to a rough start, but some, if not most, Kings fans still like their team’s 13th overall pick.
Sacramento Kings’ Thoughts On Devin Carter
The Sacramento Kings projected Devin Carter as “someone who could step in from the first day and play some minutes behind D’Aaron Fox.”
After all, Carter was one of the best college basketball players in the nation last season. He led the Providence Friars to a 21-14 record and a spot in the Big East conference semifinals. However, a sprained left ankle and other nagging injuries caused him to sit out, and his Friars suffered a 62-57 loss at Amica Mutual Pavilion.
Despite the setback in Providence, Carter declared for the 2024 NBA Draft. Carter wrote, “This is not goodbye — it’s just a new chapter in this incredible journey from God … I am thrilled about what lies ahead and am committed to making all of you proud as I take this next step.”
Carter was drafted 13th overall by the Kings, who appeared to believe in him like his Friars coaches and teammates, but he suffered another nagging injury. He might or might not be an injury-prone NBA player.
Sacramento Kings Moves After Devin Carter Update
The Sacramento Kings can’t dwell on Devin Carter’s upcoming shoulder surgery appointment. Kings Head Coach Mike Brown recently agreed to a contract extension through the 2026-27 NBA season. Brown has only served as head coach since 2022, but his two-year tenure thus far has put the team at a competitive level with other good, if not great, NBA teams. He has Sacramento on a similar track to former Head Coach Rick Adelman from 1999 to 2006.
In addition, Sacramento acquired DeMar DeRozan as part of a sign-and-trade deal. DeRozan agreed to a three-year, $76 million contract with the Kings.
Despite the Carter shoulder surgery, Sacramento should be alright as the recent DeRozan agreement just made the Western Conference a lot more interesting.
