Sacramento Kings and Mike Brown Come To Spectacular Extension Agreement Through 2026-27

Sacramento Kings Mike Brown

It seems Mike Brown is the reincarnation of Rick Adelman (1999-2006) as they’re the only coaches to have put the Sacramento Kings at a competitive level with other top-tier franchises in the Western Conference since 1985.

There were rumors that the Kings’ coach might not continue with the franchise as there were some controversies about his next contract. However, due to how the coach made the franchise reminisce about Rick Adelman’s impact at the Sacramento Kings, coupled with his impact on the team’s development in just two seasons, a mutual agreement was inevitable.

Will this end up being a good contract for both sides?

How Mike Brown’s Next Contract With The Sacramento Kings Went

Brown’s impact on the franchise since he became coach in May 2022 acted as a yardstick to influence an increment in the coach’s annual payment. The two-time Coach of the Year desired an increase to $10 million a year when the Kings offered him a $27 million total value for a three-year extension with $7 million per year. Bonuses could have gotten Brown’s contract to nine million per year.

However, it wasn’t what Brown desired. On the other hand, if the Kings had won their play-in tournament against the Pelicans, this extension would have been smoother. Thus, after some back-and-forth discussions, on Friday Night, the Kings announced that they would love to continue their relationship with Mike Brown and see what he could achieve in the next three years with the franchise.

The contract extension agreement included a $30 million 3-year agreement which runs through 2026-2027 with $8.5 million per year, which is a $4 million increment from his previous year’s payment, with potential bonuses that could make the annual payment $10 million. Therefore, Brown still got what he desired from the Sacramento Kings. Also with this salary, Brown would be regarded as one of the highest-paid coaches in NBA history.

Brown’s Impact On The Sacramento Kings

Mike Brown joined the Kings as the team’s head coach from the Golden State Warriors, where he was their assistant coach from 2016 to 2022, in May 2022. His influence during his first year as their coach couldn’t be overlooked.

The highlight of his career at Sacramento was guiding Sacramento to the NBA Playoffs for the first time since the 2005-2006 season. He received his second Coach of the Year award in 2023.

Brown has coached the Cleveland Cavaliers, and Los Angeles Lakers and assisted at the Golden State Warriors with Steve Kerr as the head coach. Throughout his coaching career, he has recorded 441-286 with the Cavaliers, Lakers and Kings.

In his first year as the Kings’ coach, the team finished as the third seed in the Western Conference(48-34) and were topped by only the Nuggets and Grizzlies. The Kings qualified for the postseason in 2023 against the Golden State Warriors but lost in seven games.

The Sacramento Kings haven’t finished their regular season with more than 40 wins in a season since 2005-2006. Further, in his second season, Sacramento finished as the ninth seed with a 46-36 record but didn’t qualify for the postseason. Thus, Brown’s record with the Kings for two seasons is 94-70 (.573). With this record, why wouldn’t the Kings agree to a new contract with Mike Brown?
