Ryan Gravenberch on Facing Criticism: ‘Everyone Calls Me Nonchalant’

Ryan Gravenberch

Ryan Gravenberch has been phenomenal for Liverpool in his new No.6 role. The Reds have had their pursuit of holding a midfielder unsuccessful. Martin Zubimendi who was their main target chose to remain at Real Sociedad despite Liverpool’s tempting offer for the Spaniard. However, Arne Slot said that his squad is quite versatile enough to cover the role. So far in the past 3 games he has employed Ryan Gravenberch for the role. And the Dutchman has excelled in the Red’s first three league games.

Gravenberch, who was a former Ajax and Bayern Munich player, has spoken about the criticism he faced, on whether he was capable of playing the role before the start of the season. The 22-year-old highlighted he is more than ready to keep proving himself.

The Dutchman referred to his coach has influenced him in terms of playing pattern and mentality. He said: “The coach knows that I have a lot of football in me,”

“He has a clear plan, with the build-up, with the pressing. It is up to me to maintain that and be consistent. He gave me the chance from the start. I had to focus on a certain position. A bit more defensive. I do my thing and that works out well. That has to do with myself and with the coach. There was clarity from the start. We play as a team, and then the individual also looks better.

The 22-year-old pointed out that both coaches were great, however, he highlighted the differences between both coaches. He specified he was more comfortable under Slot. He was asked if he was a new person under Slot, and he said: “No, that’s all exaggerated. I’m the same Gravenberch,” he continued saying “I sometimes had matches where I only touched the ball after five minutes,” said Gravenberch about playing under Klopp last season. Then I don’t get into my game, I don’t get into my rhythm. This feels more comfortable to me. At Ajax; I played everything there. Even when things went a bit less well for a few matches. That is different abroad.”

Gravenberch on Koeman

Before the Netherlands Nations League games ahead, Ronald Koeman spoke about Gravenberch. The Dutchman hinted about the 22-year-old being lazy. However, the Liverpool star addressed the talk and gave a reply. He said: “Everyone tells me that I am nonchalant. It is just in me, I started well at Liverpool and now I also carry those characteristics with me, but you don’t hear that when things are going well. Everyone makes mistakes.”

The Liverpool star will be hoping to express his top form at Liverpool for his National team. The Netherlands is expected to face Bosnia Herzegovina on the seventh and will face Germany on the 10th for their Nations League games.
