Two months after picking up the biggest win of his career, Ryan Garcia has claimed to be retired at just 25 years old. The fighter announced his retirement on social media on June 19.
Since his signature win over Devin Haney on April 20, Garcia has been on a roller coaster of emotions. The 25-1 prodigy is still under investigation for alleged PED usage in his win over Haney and was arrested earlier in June on charges of vandalism before being admitted to a local hospital.
Ryan Garcia Claims to be Retired on Social Media
I’m officially retired
— RYAN GARCIA (@RyanGarcia) June 19, 2024
Since his win over Devin Haney on April 20 has become the subject of investigation for alleged PED usage, Ryan Garcia has actively shared his life with fans on social media. In his most recent tweet on June 19, ‘King Ry’ claimed that he is “officially” done with boxing despite being at the peak of his career.
With three simple words, Garcia tweeted:
“I’m officially retired”
Reports have surfaced suggesting that the investigation into Garcia’s alleged drug usage is reaching its conclusion with the boxer expected to be facing a multi-year suspension. However, the fighter did not make public the specific reason for at least teasing the idea of hanging up his gloves.
Ryan Garcia’s Drug-Testing Investigation
As a significant underdog, Ryan Garcia entered his bout with Devin Haney on April 20, with most viewers expecting him to get knocked out early. Instead, Garcia immediately hurt the WBC super lightweight champion and knocked Haney thrice in 12 rounds to win a majority decision.
However, since his career-defining victory, the Voluntary Anti-Doping Association came out to declare that the 25-year-old had tested positive for Ostarine in the week leading up to the fight. Ostarine is a banned substance that gives athletes a significant increase in strength, thus potentially leading to the cause of his three knockdowns of Haney.
Garcia declared his innocence and attempted to send in a B-sample that was reported to have also tested positive.
Ryan Garcia’s Arrest
Roughly one month after the news of his positive drug-testing sample was released, Ryan Garcia was the subject of controversy once again as he was arrested in Beverly Hills on June 8 for felony vandalism. He would be released shortly thereafter but caused an estimate of $15,000 in damages.
After being sent to a local jail, Garcia reportedly complained about an undisclosed medical issue and was sent to the Cedars-Sinai Medical Center, where he was held for the next couple of days. While hospitalized, the troubled boxer sent out a series of tweets in which he claimed to “feel like Ryan Spears, a.k.a. Brittney Spears.”
Garcia would later be released from the hospital and detainment, but it has been quiet since then. The fighter has resumed normal activity — for his standards — that has included complaining about his lack of payment from Golden Boy Promotions for his fight with Haney and threatening to quit boxing.
Potential UFC Career
With boxing temporarily off the table, Ryan Garcia tweeted his claim to pursue a career in the UFC. Stating that boxing had become too “corrupt” for his liking, the former prodigy believes he has more potential in the Octagon.
Though not officially confirmed, Garcia is rumored to have been training in Brazilian jiu-jitsu for several years after previously expressing an interest in MMA. He has also engaged in back-and-forth interactions with UFC bantamweight champion Sean O’Malley.
While Garcia may push for a separate career in the cage similar to those of Claressa Shields, Savannah Marshall, and Amanda Serrano, he is unlikely to end up in the UFC with no MMA experience on his record.
