Ronald Koeman Unhappy with his 26-Year-Old Forward Move to Saudi

Ronald Koeman

Ronald Koeman has spoken ahead of the Netherlands Nations League games within the next few days The Dutchman addressed different issues, especially on his players’ availability. Koeman coached the Netherlands in the Euro 2024 semifinals where they were ousted by England thanks to a late-minute goal by Ollie Watkins. The Netherlands is now to prepare for the Nations League games, which they’ll face against Bosnia on the 7th of September and Germany on the 10th.

The Dutchman has addressed one of his players, Steve Bergwijn, who during the transfer window left his European club Ajax for the Saudi League. And in his discourse, he seemed unpleased with Bergwijn’s decisions

Ronald Koeman expressed his disappointment with Steve Bergwijn’s move to Saudi Arabia, and He said: “Georginio Wijnaldum once went that way because he had a problem at Paris Saint-Germain.” Koeman continued: “He could only go to that country to play football until January. In Bergwijn’s case, he goes at the age of 26, sporting ambition does not prevail. Not everyone thinks, fortunately, the same way. I think when you are 26 the main ambition should be sporting and not financial, but those are choices players make.”

Bergwijn is expected to play under Laurent Blanc in Saudi Arabia’s club Al Ittihad. The team consists of players like N’Golo Kanté, Karim Benzema, Fabinho, Houssem Aouar, Predrag Rajkovic, and Moussa Diaby.

Koeman Expresses Further

Koeman believes Bergwijn was not duty-bound to accept the offer to Al Ittihad. He said: “He could have stayed at Ajax, couldn’t he? And I think they pay OK at Ajax too. But yes, it’s his choice,”. The Dutchman continued saying: “I haven’t been in that situation myself. I could go to Barcelona. I think if Bergwijn could have gone to Barcelona, he wouldn’t have gone to Saudi Arabia either.”

The transfer seems to have made Koeman ignore the name of the 26-year-old ahead of the players lists set for the forthcoming Nation League games. Koeman continued saying: “The book is closed for him, though, “He has not contacted me about this. I think he knows how I think about this.”

Koeman on Captain Virgil van Dijk

Koeman has affirmed that Liverpool’s captain will be committed to his National team until the 2026 World Cup. And the possibility of beyond the World Cup hasn’t been exempted. Koeman said he traveled to Liverpool to meet the Dutchman face to face. He said: “I thought it was so important to go to him to see and feel with him: are you going to give it your all for another two years at the highest level and do you still see a future for yourself? And he does. And I do the same with him. All doubt is gone, he just goes on,”

Koeman continued saying: “He admitted he did not reach the level you would expect from him as a player at the European Championship. As captain, I think he did a great job. But perhaps as a result, he put too much energy into others rather than into himself.”
