Rohit Sharma had a fantastic start to the T20 World Cup, leading India to a comprehensive victory over Ireland at the Nassau Cricket Stadium in New York on Wednesday. Despite an injury that forced him to retire as a precautionary measure, the Indian captain delivered a stellar performance. He remained tall in India’s batting performance in the previous match.

Rohit Sharma scored a brilliant 52 off 37 balls, becoming the only player to surpass the 50-run mark at the newly built venue. His innings, which included three sixes, laid a solid foundation for India’s comfortable eight-wicket win. Sharma’s decision-making was impeccable from the start, and his leadership was evident throughout the match.
In addition to his on-field heroics, Rohit Sharma reached several significant milestones. He became the first cricketer to hit 600 sixes in international cricket, with his tally now standing at 600 sixes in 427 matches. This achievement places him ahead of Chris Gayle (553 sixes in 483 matches) and Shahid Afridi (476 sixes in 524 matches).
Rohit Sharma also crossed the 4000-run mark in T20Is, becoming only the second batter after Virat Kohli to score more than 4000 runs in all three formats of the game. Furthermore, he notched up 1000 runs in T20 World Cups, becoming the second Indian after Kohli to achieve this feat.

Rohit Sharma’s leadership prowess was highlighted when Rishabh Pant hit the winning six, making Rohit India’s most successful T20I captain. He surpassed MS Dhoni’s win tally as captain in T20Is, with 42 wins in 55 matches compared to Dhoni’s 41 wins in 73 matches. Rohit’s win percentage of 77.29% is also significantly higher than Dhoni’s 59.28%. Virat Kohli follows with 30 wins in 50 T20Is.
Globally, Rohit Sharma joined England’s Eoin Morgan and Afghanistan’s Asghar Afghan, each with 42 wins, but remains fourth on the list of captains with the most T20I victories. Pakistan’s Babar Azam leads the list with 46 wins, followed by USA’s Brian Masaba with 44.
India’s bowlers played a crucial role in the victory, with all-rounder Hardik Pandya taking 3-27, Jasprit Bumrah delivering an economical spell with 2-6 in three overs, and left-armer Arshdeep Singh contributing 2-35. The pace attack accounted for eight of the 10 Irish wickets, restricting Ireland to a modest 96 runs.

Following Rohit’s blitz at the top, Rishabh Pant added an unbeaten 36 off 26 balls, guiding India to 97 for 2 in 12.2 overs and sealing the win. India now prepares to face their fierce rivals, Pakistan, in a marquee match on Sunday.
“Early wickets set the tone for us,” Sharma said post-match. “It was good to spend time on this wicket, although it didn’t change too much in the second innings. We will prepare for the Pakistan game as if the conditions will be similar.”
With a strong start to their T20 World Cup campaign, India looks forward to continuing their momentum against Pakistan in what promises to be a thrilling encounter.
