Shahid Afridi Criticizes Babar Azam After Rohit Sharma Leads India to T20 World Cup Victory

The Pakistan cricket community is not new to unexpected performances given in T20 World Cups, and the first one to congratulate Rohit Sharma and the Indian team was none other than legend Shahid Afridi. The title-winning fourth T20 World Cup victory came after 17 years of waiting for an ICC trophy for team India with victory in the Kensington Oval in Bridgetown.

As is the norm, after India sealed the T20 World Cup deal, most of the cricket pundits and enthusiasts shower Rohit Sharma with praise, including the legendary Shahid Afridi. Afridi praised Rohit for his positive mindset and how he motivates his team to be aggressive, stating that is why India has been winning.

However, Afridi, commenting on Babar Azam, Pakistan’s skipper, said that Pakistan’s team was knocked out early in the tournament. Unfortunately for Pakistan, it was crushed by co-hosts the USA in a group-stage match that had to be seen as the worst possible experience for the team and cricket fans.

Afridi’s statements stressed the need for a central authority to deliver positive results in international cricket. He also felt Babar Azam needed to set a much better example and show a lot more conviction when he was leading his team. Afridi also wanted the Pakistan Cricket Board (PCB) to introduce many changes and to invest more seriously in cricket at the lower levels in Pakistan.

He said that substantial and permanent changes have to be made to build a more potent team to avoid such an incident in future international championships.

But the overall performance of Pakistan was quite poor, as they could not move to the Super 8 stage, and they performed even worse than India and the USA.

The Importance of Rohit Sharma’s Strong Leadership

Speaking to the news agency PTI, Afridi stressed the importance of having a good captain, citing Rohit Sharma as an example.

Therefore, a leader is always an important figure, as they are the ones who must guide their followers to achieve the set goals. It should be noted that gestures and other attributes of the leader influence the actions of every contributor in the group.

Hence, the leader has to take the lead in changing social perception. For instance, let’s discuss Rohit Rohit Sharma, who is an Indian international cricketer.

For instance, Rohit Sharma is the star player of the Indian cricket team. Consider his game and how he plays his knock. These lower-order batsmen who come in are all composed because the captain enjoys and encourages the use of aggression and attack. Thus, I always think that the position of the captain is very crucial.

When Pakistan was knocked out of the T20 World Cup in the initial round, Babar Azam accepted the fact that certain posts within the PCB would be reconsidered. However, Pakistan did not go tally empty-handed as they defeated Ireland and Canada in the group stage matches.

Call for Grassroots Investment

The former captain stressed the importance of having a better domestic structure, starting from the grassroots level:

For now, I don’t know what kind of ideas the PCB chairman has, and I like waiting to find out what changes to expect. All the same, I have always been supportive of the team and will continue to be so. I am also yet to wait and see what these changes will be. Decisions that will have a positive result need to be made, and the changes should not always be skin-deep.

The real problem is deep-rooted and can be observed at the lower levels of cricket organizations in Pakistan. Our product is not strong at the grass-roots level yet; if we invest, good players will come up, Afridi said. Afridi’s comments reflect his belief that Pakistan’s cricketing success hinges on strong leadership and robust grassroots development.

He urged the Pakistan Cricket Board (PCB) to implement meaningful and lasting changes to improve the national team’s performance. Afridi emphasized the importance of having a strong leader, highlighting how Rohit Sharma’s leadership positively influenced India’s T20 World Cup victory.

He also stressed that superficial changes would not suffice and that investing in grassroots cricket is crucial for producing talented players and elevating Pakistan’s cricketing standards on the international stage.
