Robert McIntiyre finished the third round of the 2024 RBC Canadian Open in brilliant style on Saturday. The 27-year-old Scot went 5 under in his last 5 holes to open up a comfortable four-stroke lead going into Sunday. Can McIntyre hold off the big dogs for his first tour victory?
Robert McIntyre Pulls Off Amazing Late Run on Saturday
There was a log jam atop the leaderboard at -10 late Saturday afternoon as McIntyre approached the 14th tee. He was on a good run, but Rory Mcllroy was lurking just a few strokes back and McIntyre’s playing partner, Ryan Fox, was tied with him at -10. After a bogey at 13, McIntyre found another gear. He birdied 14, 15, and 16, then drained a 30-foot putt for eagle on 17. Everyone else in the field was left in the dust.
The 27-year-old McIntyre is from Oban, Scotland, and turned pro in 2017. He has 3 wins internationally and played on the European Ryder Cup team in 2023. McIntyre is a fixture on the DP World Tour, with a Top 10 Eligibility Ranking through 2024. While he doesn’t have any wins on the PGA Tour yet, he has had three Top 10 finishes this season, including a T8 at the PGA Championship just a couple of weeks ago.

Robert McIntyre moved from Scotland to Orlando last year to play on the PGA Tour full-time. He’s had a pretty rough go of it so far, missing the cut in five of his first ten events in 2024. Veteran looper Mike Burrow carried his bag initially, with Scott Carmichael taking over after the Masters. Things then went back and forth for a few weeks before McIntyre decided he needed to reset.
Enter Dougie McIntyre, Robert’s father and long-time coach and caddy. When Robert McIntyre was asked about the move, he said it was a quick change after a phone call the Saturday before the RBC Canadian Open:
“I’m trying to work it all out,” MacIntyre said Thursday. “Yeah, it was an emergency phone call on Saturday, and he stepped up to the plate. He’s a good golfer himself, but this kind of level, he’s a bit out of his depth. I thought he did a great job and kept it so simple. The numbers are what they are. Go and add a good shot to that number, and the results should be half decent.”
The results have been decidedly better than half-decent, with McIntyre playing the first two rounds without a single bogey this week and running well ahead of the pack going into Sunday. The oddsmakers certainly think Robert McIntyre can get it done today, with his odds at -105 as of this writing.
With dad on the bag and a comfortable lead, Robert McIntyre should be able to hold out for the win at the 2024 RBC Canadian Open. However, one never knows who will make a late charge and quite a few good players are lurking at -10. If the young Scotsman can win his first PGA Tour title with his father on his bag, it will be one of the year’s greatest stories.
