Rich Hill Pitches In Front Of MLB Scouts

Rich Hill is eyeing a return to Major League Baseball.

One of baseball’s longest-tenured pitchers may be returning to a Major League mound once again. Rich Hill threw in front of major league scouts on Friday as he attempts to make his way back on an active roster.

After not playing since 2023, Hill looks to return to action and help a team make it through the postseason stretch. His performance during the showcase was top tier as multiple organizations are turning their heads toward him. Will Rich Hill make it back on a Major League roster again?

On Friday, August 9, Rich Hill threw a full bullpen in front of multiple scouts. He ended up throwing over 100 pitches as he impressed many of those watching him. He threw his entire arsenal of pitches, looking sharp and showcasing an immense amount of stamina. His pitch command, velocity, and movement were all at his elite standard.

The 44-year-old’s goal was to be prepared to throw many pitches to demonstrate his ability to fit in anywhere on a pitching staff. Hill was immensely prepared so that he could join a team immediately and not focus time on Minor League assignments. Though he has been a starter for the majority of his career, he is ready to fill any role in the rotation or the bullpen.

In an interview with Rob Bradford on the Baseball Isn’t Boring Podcast, Rich Hill discussed his outing. He mentioned readiness to start, meaning he is prepared and able to throw at least six strong innings and have an overall quality start at the big league level right now.  “I feel like it went well. The ball came out of my hand really well,” said Hill. “Being able to showcase that volume has been something I’ve been working towards.”

According to the Athletics’ Dan Hayes, the Minnesota Twins have expressed interest in Rich Hill and are the top contenders for his services. They have battled recent pitching woes and cultivated a timid approach to the trade deadline in terms of the depth of their pitching staff. Hill was a part of the Twins organization in 2020 where he threw eight games and garnered a 3.03 ERA.

Hill’s Career

Rich Hill’s career came to a halt at the end of last season. Facing free agency, Hill decided to hang up the cleats for the time being and began coaching his son, Bryce’s, Little League Team. As he spent time coaching, he began to work out with his assistant coach. According to Hill, he treated these workouts as he would in the offseason, making the showcase feel like normal spring training.

Hill has been in the Major Leagues for nearly 20 years. He debuted with the Chicago Cubs in 2005. Throughout his long and successful time in the MLB, he has garnered a career 4,01 ERA and a 1.26 WHIP while collecting a total of 1,423 strikeouts.

As a well-renowned and highly admired player in the league, many fans would love to see Hill back on a big league mound. As a decision will be made within the next week, Hill hopes to be heading to a new city to start another chapter of his Major League career.
