REPORT: New York Yankees Find John Sterling Replacement

The New York Yankees have a lot of question marks to fill on the field during the 2024-25 MLB offseason but they are reportedly nearing a deal to get their radio play-by-play announcer locked up. This of course was the role of John Sterling, who announced his retirement in the middle of the 2024 MLB season and wound up returning in September to call the final few series of the regular season and the playoffs. Now that his retirement is officially here, who are the New York Yankees going to have in the WFAN booth with Suzyn Waldman? Let’s take a closer look at the most recent update.

New York Yankees Radio Play-by-Play Announcer is…

The New York Yankees’ new radio play-by-play announcer is reportedly going to be Dave Sims, according to Ryan Glasspiegel of the New York Post. This would be a full circle moment if the deal is finalized as Sims previously worked as a midday sports talk host with Ed Coleman on WFAN from 1989-93. His most recent job was with the Seattle Mariners as their television play-by-play announcer. The NY Post also confirmed that the team would approve of WFAN’s decision to hire Dave Sims. The job was reportedly narrowed down to Sims and Spanish broadcaster Rickie Ricardo, who also filled in some games with Suzyn Waldman when Sterling would not be able to be at games.

John Sterling was viewed as the voice of the New York Yankees, working 35 years as the radio play-by-play voice and retired at 86 years old in April. This is something that is going to make the broadcast on radio even stronger as another quality voice will be replacing the legend of John Sterling. It is not known as of this writing if Sims will be on the call for all 162 regular season games or if they will have him be the primary voice while others would also continue to fill in as the season goes around, similar to what happened during this previous baseball season.

Either way, this is a great hire for the New York Yankees fans who are not able to watch the game for whatever reason. It will be interesting to see how long of a deal and how many games per season Sims calls if and when the deal is officially finalized.
