Gareth Southgate resigns as the coach of the English National team. The 53-year-old decided despite the offers of the English FA planning to extend his stay beyond 2026. The Englishman was able to impress since the 2018 World Cup where he took the English team to the Semifinals of the 2018 World Cup.
Afterwards, they were evicted by Croatia. They managed to come out fourth, as they lost third place to Belgium. However, three years later he was able to push England to the finals of the Euro 2020. This was after several impressive displays from The Three Lions, especially beating Germany.
Unfortunately for Gareth Southgate and his team, they ended up losing the finals on penalties.
Gareth Southgate so far has been able to push England to impressive heights in major international tournaments. Moreover, luck hasn’t always been on his side. During the 2022 World Cup, they lost 2-1 to the would-be runner-up France in the quarterfinals.
And in the recently concluded Euros, his team lost to Spain in the Euro 2024 finals.
Gareth Southgate Leaves His Role
Gareth Southgate has left his role as English manager, the Englishman confirmed as reported by Fabrizio Romano saying:
As a proud Englishman, it has been the honor of my life to play for England and to manage England. It has meant everything to me, and I have given it my all. But it’s time for change and for a new chapter. I’m leaving my role.
The departure of Gareth Southgate will put a lot into the hands of the English FA. As they’ll now be in search of a proper replacement. Southgate’s last match for England was against Spain in the Euro finals. The Three Lions saw themselves outclassed by the Spanish side.
However, their run in the Euros has been impressive. Even though they haven’t been playing the best of football. Nonetheless, they always know how to grind out results. The future of the Englishman after this resignation is unknown. But most likely he might want to take a break time from the game.
Potential Replacement for Gareth Southgate
According to Sky Sports, there as been lists of Possible managers that could replace the Englishman. The English FA will be looking forward to making a quick decision on the issues of his possible replacement. By September European countries will be back for the Nations League tournament. Some few names have been highlighted as a possible replacement for the Englishman.
Mauricio Pochettino is part of the names topping the list. The Former Argentine Player coached Tottenham Hotspur and PSG years back. He was able to help Spurs to reach the finals of the Champions League and also got to the semifinals with PSG. The Argentine coached Chelsea throughout last season, however at the end of the season he resigned.
Another name on the list is Graham Potter another former Brighton and Chelsea manager. The two other confirmed names by Sky Sports are Lee Carsely and Eddie Howe. The first Englishman is the coach of the England national under-21 football team. Eddie Howe on the other end is Newcastle United’s coach.

This is a more defensive tactical approach that allows his team to contain threats. And at the end punish them on the break. He is also known for having big faith in players, despite their poor form.
