On Tuesday morning, ESPN Senior NBA Insider Adrian Wojnarowski wrote on X, “ESPN Sources: Veteran guard Reggie Jackson — who agreed on a contract buyout with the Charlotte Hornets — plans to join the Philadelphia 76ers upon clearing waivers.”
Reggie Jackson, also known as “Big Government,” last played for the Denver Nuggets from 2023 to 2024. Jackson won his first NBA championship as the Nuggets eliminated the Heat in five games on June 12, 2023. Jackson also scored a season-high 35 points, along with 13 assists, five rebounds, and two steals, on November 27, 2023.
Jackson, a veteran guard born in Italy, and raised in England and the United States to an American military couple, will likely play for his fifth NBA team in his 13-year professional basketball career this fall. Read on for further details surrounding Jackson’s latest plan in the league.
Reggie Jackson’s Current Plan
NBA veteran guard Reggie Jackson has agreed on a contract buyout with the Charlotte Hornets, and plans to sign with the Philadelphia 76ers upon clearing waivers, sources told ESPN on Tuesday.
Jackson, 34, arrived in a July 2024 trade with the Denver Nuggets as part of a salary-shedding maneuver. The 34-year-old reportedly plans to reconnect with his former Los Angeles Clippers teammate, Paul George, on a Sixers roster loading up on NBA veterans with more postseason experience. Jackson will join the Sixers’ guard rotation, which features NBA All-Stars Tyrese Maxey, Kelly Oubre Jr., and Eric Gordon, along with NBA rookie Jared McCain. The 34-year-old averaged 17.8 points on 40% three-point shooting during the Clippers’ run to the 2021 Western Conference Finals.
Reggie Jackson’s Time With His Former NBA Teams
Although his Denver Nuggets stint was rather brief, Reggie Jackson did well for himself. As a Denver Nuggets, Jackson positively participated in the Nuggets’ last two postseasons, winning an NBA championship in 2023, and averaging 9.8 minutes in 12 playoff games in 2024. Jackson has played in 87 postseason games in his 13-year NBA career with stops in Oklahoma City, Oklahoma, Detroit, Michigan, Los Angeles, California, and Denver, Colorado. Jackson’s career has been fairly consistent minus his previous injuries, such as his Grade 3 right ankle sprain suffered on December 26, 2017.
Reggie Jackson’s Boston Ties
NBA fans should keep their eyes on Reggie Jackson, whether they’re Boston sports fans or not. Jackson played high school basketball at Palmer High School in Colorado Springs, Colorado, and college basketball at Boston College in Chestnut Hill, Massachusetts. Jackson’s a local basketball star to Boston residents.
Jackson’s soon-to-be signing with the Boston Celtics’ rival, the Philadelphia 76ers, should make things interesting for the fans. Jackson played three NCAA seasons with the Boston College Eagles from 2008 to 2011 before declaring for the 2011 NBA Draft, where he was drafted 24th overall by the Oklahoma City Thunder. As a Boston College Eagle, Jackson was named to the First-Team All-ACC in 2011. Jackson’s other NCAA accomplishments included his starting role after Tyrese Rice’s departure, along with him leading the Eagles in scoring with 18.2 points per game and subsequently leading the team to the NIT.
Next season, Boston looks to run it back for its 19th NBA championship, while Philadelphia loads up to dethrone their rival. Philadelphia’s acquisition of Paul George shows that they’re trying to build around their new big three of George, Joel Embiid, and Tyrese Maxey.
