Uptight Red Sox Nation Bash Unconventional Infielder

Red Sox Nation is going after one of their own.

Most sports fans across the country have no idea what it feels like to be a part of four winning professional sports teams. Pride is exuded from the marrow of of their bones when it comes to New England sports and no one will let an outsider live that down. Most of America views Red Sox Nation as some of if not the most obnoxious fans there are. They love their teams and have a lot to say when it comes to their choices on and off the field.

Brash Boston Fans

Red Sox Nation feels a deep responsibility to tell it like it is, be blunt, trolling on social media and in the stands, and not afraid to use their words to cut into anyone standing in the way of a winning season. That includes the home team. Especially when the season is crumbling, the fans want someone to blame. Sometimes it is Alex Cora or John Henry who are easy targets but this time it is Triston Casas who is taking the heat.

As Boston natives rarely hold anything back, they have been known to give the players a piece of their minds, because well, they are their players. Not yours and if the fans have something to say about them, even if it is insulting, the fans feel obligated to let these brash and sometimes derogatory comments ensue. Most recently Casas has been rolling around on the tongues of Red Sox Nation.

Casas Pregame Routine Catches Cracks

Back in September 2022 when Casas debuted as a rookie for the Red Sox, he came out to begin his pregame routine. Most players come out in uniform, do some stretches, run a bit, and do what they need to have clarity walking into that day’s game. Casas came out sporting no shirt, blue Red Sox shorts, and a red towel on which he laid down to begin his yoga routine. The announcers were shocked by this and ever since Red Sox Nation hasn’t let up on his choices to remain an “outside-the-box” player.

He paints his nails. He comes out for pregame work practically nude. He does yoga. His walk-up song is “Need It’ by Migos with lyrics like “My wrists look like a snow cone, make you want to eat it.”  He may be one of the easiest targets for Red Sox Nation in years. Growing up in Florida,  he became the 2018 first-round pick and has been developing in Boston nicely ever since despite his unorthodox ideals.

Fans Tear Into Casas

When the debut of Casas bobblehead came out in May of this year, Red Sox Nation was not pleased.  It was unveiled with Casas doing pregame yoga, shirt on but with his fingers and toenails painted. One fan said, “Imaginary Casas. He will never do Yoga. Or other exercise. Softest most out-of-shape Sox player current (and) maybe ever. As evidenced by his injury from….swinging a bat.”

Other fans call him a “clown” which is one of the nicer things Red Sox Nation has said recently about Casas. He is unique with a loud personality, can we blame him for simply being himself? Most recently in honor of being berated by Boston fans for his non-traditional choices, he decided to come out to pregame warm-ups in a red ski mask and yellow shorts. Sportskeeda’s article by Krutik Jain goes on to quote the public responses,

“This dude is a living meme,” from one fan.

“Look at this CORNBALL dude,” says another.

“Looking like Spiderman out there what in the world.”  chimed another fan.

The list goes on and some comments are deemed inappropriate to report on as Red Sox Nation makes harsh jabs at the home team first baseman. He is not alone. There is a history of boos and intense rage at Fenway when the seasons have been decimated. This is the toughest fan base in America and there is also some pride taken from being so callous.

Five-time All-Star who won nine Golden Gloves, Torii Hunter had a no-trade clause written into his contract as he spoke up about how racist the fans are in Boston. Not to mention this year’s suspension of  Jarren Duran, which was due to his response to the vicious Red Sox Nation. Players don’t just scream awful things into the stands, players don’t write in no-trade clauses because of an extremely supportive fan base.

Criticism Equals Love In Beantown

Although it may not be the right thing to do, Red Sox Nation has gained a pit bull type of reputation. Casas doesn’t have time for haters but what this Miami native may not know, is that the more you are ragged on in Boston the more they care. Being a heavy left-handed hitter for the lineup, Casas has proven himself this year despite his critics. Red Sox Nation will continue to attempt to flatten his ego as he develops for the team.

The fans aren’t phasing him as he reported to the Boston Globe as to why he does it, “Because I can and I wanted to and I did. ” What other people think doesn’t seem to shake young Casas which is something we could all learn from. We are all here for the Red Sox lefty Spiderman Yogi to continue to support Boston in the race to the playoffs this season. Red ski mask, or not.
