The 31-year-old reportedly left Madrid’s training ground in tears on Tuesday. This is as a result of earlier suffering a suspected tear to the meniscus in his right knee. He torn the cruciate ligament in his left knee last August and has not played again for Madrid.
The Belgian has been sidelined since August after rupturing the cruciate ligament in his left knee. He has been touted to return to action in the final weeks of the season. The Real Madrid goalkeeper was approaching the final stretch of his recovery but left a training session in tears. He left the pitch while in training on Tuesday after suffering another serious setback.
Madrid Statement
“Following tests carried out today, our player Thibaut Courtois has been diagnosed with a ruptured internal meniscus in his right knee,” Madrid said in a statement.
“Courtois is now unlikely to play for Madrid in the rest of the current campaign. Meanwhile, he was already ruled out featuring for Belgium at the European Championships in the summer.”
Real Madrid manager, Carlo Ancelotti, was expecting Courtois back after the March international break. now it looks set to be 2024/25 before he is back on a football pitch.
Injury Impact on Upcoming Fixtures
Sources close to the club had said that the game against Athletic Bilbao on March 31 was a possible return date for the Belgian. He was due to take part in a friendly match against Castilla, Madrid’s youth team, on Wednesday.
Today’s news makes it unlikely that he will return to the first team this season. Likely to cast fresh doubt on his status for Belgium at the European Championships this summer. It was a major blow for Courtois, who had become a key player for Carlo Ancelotti. He has established himself as one of the world’s best in his position.

The recovery timeline for the meniscus tear is estimated to be around two months, effectively ruling Courtois out for the remainder of the season. A decision on potential surgery to repair the meniscus will be made shortly in consultation with team doctors.
Despite this latest setback, reports indicate the injury is not career-threatening, and Courtois is expected to be back in time for pre-season training.
