Real Madrid head coach Carlo Ancelotti has announced that Vinicius Junior is dealing with “a cervical problem” sustained during Saturday’s La Liga match against Villarreal, which may sideline him for a while. The Brazilian winger scored in the 73rd minute, helping Los Blancos lead 2-0, with Federico Valverde opening the scoring earlier.
Vinicius was substituted in the 79th minute, and Ancelotti indicated that the player would need to be evaluated to determine the extent of the injury. “He has a cervical issue and is completely blocked. He’s in pain and will undergo tests in the next few hours,” Ancelotti told reporters after the game.
In this 2024-2025 season, Junior has appeared in nine matches in La Liga, scoring four goals and providing four assists. He has also won many crucial penalties for Real Madrid. It would be difficult for the team to win without a star player like him.
Vinicius Junior’s haunting injury
While the cervical issue suggests neck pain, there are also reports of a shoulder problem that could affect Junior’s availability for Brazil during the international break. He has been in excellent form for Real Madrid this season, scoring four goals and providing seven assists in 12 appearances across all competitions.
Real Madrid’s next match is on October 19 against Celta Vigo, followed by fixtures against Borussia Dortmund in the Champions League and Barcelona in La Liga later in the month. It would be difficult from Real Madrid’s point of view to win those fixtures without key players like Junior, Dani Carvajal, Thibaut Courtois, David Alaba, and Brahim Diaz.
Additionally, the team will be without Dani Carvajal for the rest of the season due to a serious knee injury sustained during the Villarreal match. Carvajal’s injury occurred in the game’s later stages at the Bernabeu, and the Spanish international player is not expected to return until the 2025-26 season.
Real Madrid’s comeback
Ancelotti’s side had lost 1-0 to Lille in the Champions League before facing Villarreal. But they managed to secure a victory in this league match. He praised the team’s discipline and attitude: “We controlled the game well, defending solidly without taking risks. It could have been tricky against a good team, but we earned three important points.”
Ancelotti mentioned that Valverde’s goal resulted from a rehearsed move they practiced earlier. This highlighted the attacking talent in the squad, including Vinicius, Kylian Mbappé, Valverde, and Jude Bellingham. Real Madrid’s unbeaten run in La Liga now stands at 41 matches, with their last loss in the league occurring against Atletico Madrid in September 2023. Real Madrid has yet to disclose official reports on Vinicius Junior’s injury duration. Fans hope he and the other players will be back as soon as possible to face their arch-rivals FC Barcelona.
