Real Madrid Defender Ferland Mendy Signs New Deal

Ferland Mendy, Real Madrid

Real Madrid manager Carlo Ancelotti has confirmed that defender Ferland Mendy has signed a new contract with the club. The 29-year-old has been an important player for Los Blancos, contributing to their Champions League victories in 2022 and 2024.

Mendy, who is Real Madrid’s first-choice left-back, has already started four La Liga matches in the 2024-25 season as the team looks to defend its Spanish title. However, he was on the bench during Real Madrid’s recent 4-1 win over Espanyol on Sept. 21. Goals from Dani Carvajal, Rodrygo, Vinicius Jr., and Kylian Mbappe secured a comeback after an early Thibaut Courtois own goal.

After the match, Ancelotti confirmed Mendy’s new contract with FootballDaily, stating, “It is all signed, yes. We are very happy with Mendy.” The former Lyon defender has now committed to staying at the club for a seventh season, having joined Real Madrid in 2019.

According to transfer expert Fabrizio Romano, Ferland Mendy has signed a three-year deal that will keep him at the Bernabeu until June 2027. The agreement had been in place since August with both sides pleased to finalize the terms. Although Mendy has secured a new contract, he faces strong competition for his starting position. He knows that Francisco Garcia’s performances could challenge his spot in the team.

Despite playing 75 minutes in Real Madrid’s opening Champions League match against Stuttgart, Mendy did not start the weekend’s La Liga game against Espanyol. Instead, academy graduate Garcia took his place in the lineup, with Ancelotti showing confidence in the 25-year-old Spaniard.

Ancelotti on Mendy, His Contract

Ancelotti recently praised Mendy as the best defensive left-back in the world, but also acknowledged his offensive abilities. “His defensive level is very high, and he can keep possession,” Ancelotti said.

“I don’t expect him to play like a winger, but if needed, he could contribute offensively,” Ancelotti said. “However, it’s better for him to focus on his current role, as he sometimes has to deal with overloads.” The expectations are very high from a talented player like Ferland Mendy. There are a lot of questions to be answered not only this season but for the next three seasons.

Mendy at Real Madrid

Ferland Mendy joined Real Madrid in 2019 after completing a 48 million euro ($53,316,960 US dollars) transfer, signing a contract that initially ran until June 2025. Since his arrival, Mendy has made 176 appearances for the club, scoring six goals and providing 10 assists across all competitions (quite impressive as a left-back).

His impressive trophy collection includes two Champions League titles and three La Liga championships. Mendy was also part of the France squad that won the UEFA Nations League in 2021. It will be worth watching Mendy play and see how much of a great effect his play will have on the team. He’s proven himself to not only his coach but his teammates as well.
