RB Leipzig could have gotten one of the biggest transfers and purchases of the off-season in the German Bundesliga after beating out Bayern Munich for the signing of a wonderkid. Bayern Munich was fighting with RB Leipzig to see who would sign one of the top teenagers in the domestic league, but they lost the tense battle as the kid has chosen Leipzig to go to this summer during the transfer window.

Leipzig will be thrilled that they have put pen to paper with one of the best teenagers in the footballing world, whether you are talking about the German Bundesliga or other domestic leagues in Europe, like Ligue 1 and La Liga. Bayern Munich missed out on their one opportunity to sign the talented, creative, and dynamic midfielder from Schalke 04, a team in the 2. Bundesliga that is currently sitting toward the bottom of the table.

Bayern was hoping to bring in some young talent to bolster their ranks, develop players throughout the system, and eventually work the youngsters into the senior team to get minute and hit the ground running. However, RB Leipzig ruined Bayern’s plan by purchasing Assan Ouedraogo from Schalke 04, set for him to come to his new club this summer.

The big move sees the just 18-year-old sign with RB Leipzig for a little over $10 million – a hefty sum for a young player who hasn’t had too many minutes in the 2. Bundesliga this season. Leipzig will assess the player during a loan spell over the summer break and the preseason with the full senior squad before making a decision on whether they will keep him for the year or return him to Schalke for more game time and training.

Steep Competition?

Another team also interested in signing the creative and talented midfielder was Bayern Munich, but they were shocked at spending more than $10 million for a youngster who hasn’t seen too much game time so far. The club is in a tense predicament, as the sporting director, Freund, and the board member, Eberl, have given an ultimatum to the club that they must strengthen the squad but also reduce the player wages for the current members.

Therefore, key players like de Ligt and Kimmich might have to go in favor of younger players – like the youngster who just went to RB Leipzig instead.

But, Bayern Munich don’t want to take too many chances with their finances if they don’t play out in the long run. They could be better off keeping players like Joao Palhinha who has proven himself in the league but has a lower price tag than de Ligt, for next season.

RB Leipzig Moving Forward

RB Leipzig ended last season in fourth place in the Bundesliga, coming just seven points behind Bayern Munich and eight points behind VfB Stuttgart. If they had won three more games during their season, they would have ended the year in second place, which would have been a fantastic season for the smaller club.

They ended the year with a draw against Eintracht Frankfurt and Werder, with these two games making them out of contention for second or third place. However, they had big wins against Dortmund and SC Freiburg at the end of the year, increasing the players and club’s confidence heading into the summer break.
