The Los Angeles Rams made a big splash in Week 3 with a win against the San Francisco 49ers. The offense seems to be clicking, but they only had one decent game, which suggests there’s hope of much improvement even when they’re missing key players such as Cooper Kupp and Puka Nacua. Not only was this a win for the Rams, but more so, it was an indication of the potential this team carries if they continue doing whatever was clicked into motion here. They will face the Chicago Bears next, and the Rams must surely sustain this level of success and intensity.
New Game Plan
Head coach Sean McVay also made keen changes at the tail end. Instead of pure schemes, McVay presented a diverse game plan to keep things interesting. The Rams deviated from the one-size-fits-all 11 personnel, as they used to have two tight ends in their system. This helped flow their offense well while giving almost maximum usage of their run games.
Until now, the running game had been an issue for much of the season. Kyren Williams was too often being stuffed at the point of attack, averaging just 2.5 yards per carry. But with heavier personnel packages, the Rams did a good job in the run game for much of Week 3. The team averaged a positive 0.08 EPA per rush out of these formations, showing that this new approach paid off.
Take Advantage of Play Action
One thing that worked well for them was their attempt to become a play-action passing team. With the new game plan instituted by McVay, quarterback Matthew Stafford had the chance to run more plays to open spaces and time for confusion over the defense, so he was able to be effective enough. Of course, his statistics improved greatly, proving that he is a game-changer if done correctly.
For TuTu Atwell, the true insurance policy at the wide receiver position, he cemented himself as a vital depth receiver, particularly in the final contest, where he came through with several big plays for the Rams. Against Kansas City on Sunday, with Kupp and Nacua out, Atwell is more integral to the offense than usual. Atwell showed his explosive ability on the play by taking four passes for 93 yards and adding several big plays to the play sheet. McVay must ensure he gets the ball in Atwell’s hand to unleash the game-changing play he can make.
New Tests Confront the Rams
The Rams will face their new test against the Bears. The Rams succeeded in taking advantage of the 49ers’ loopholes. However, they have to deal with a new test facing the Bears. Yet if McVay clings to the strategies that brought him a winning game last week, like two tight ends and play action, the Rams will surely win for another game. The Rams should stick to their offense strategy. They can never create that situation against the 49ers once. Because McVay did last week, this will only present more scoring chances and enhance the team’s confidence.
As such, the Los Angeles Rams will build on the good game they played against the Chicago Bears. They will continue sticking to personnel, improving play on the run game, and using a lot of play-action. Having a few players step up, and with them on the side for now, the Rams have it in them to get this one done. With continued wins like this, things should start getting brighter for LA going into the rest of the season.
