Rahul Dravid was compelled to continue as India’s head coach after captain Rohit Sharma phoned him when he intended to resign in November of last year.
It’s amazing when a reserved, ever-calm personality expresses his true emotions without restriction. Rahul Dravid shouting his lungs out as Virat Kohli handed him the T20 World Cup trophy was a sight to behold for that reason alone. It was hardly the first time Dravid let loose.
He has done that before. But not as a world champion. Never with the World Cup at hand. He made three tries as a player and three as a coach. His sixth try, which was successful, would not have happened without Rohit Sharma.

Dravid was not willing to extend his contract following India’s painful loss to Australia in the ODI World Cup final at the Narendra Modi Stadium in Ahmedabad on November 19, 2017.
His contract had expired, and Dravid did not want to continue. But skipper Rohit Sharma’s phone call adjusted everything.
Suryakumar Yadav claimed that after winning the T20 World Cup, Rahul Dravid praised Rohit for the phone contact in November of last year that changed his mind.
The former India captain and his support crew agreed to stay till this year’s T20 World Cup to have one more chance at an ICC championship, and it proved to be a huge success.
“Many thanks for calling me back in November, Ro (Rohit), and urging me to carry on. It has been a delight and pleasure to work with each and every one of you, as well as with Ro. I appreciate your time,”
I understand that as captain and coach, we will have to communicate frequently. We have to agree and disagree. It’s been a pleasure to get to know every one of you,” Rahul Dravid remarked in a video broadcast by BCCI.
India’s Achievements with Rohit and Dravid
The Rohit Sharma-Rahul Dravid combo has helped India become global champions after 13 years. In the past two World Cups, India has won 18 out of 20 matches and lost only one, in the ODI final against Australia, while one match in this T20 World Cup was a washout. They also qualified for the WTC finals last year, making India the most consistent team across forms.
After winning the cup, Rohit stated that Dravid deserved it more than anyone else. “I believe he, more than any of us, earned that prize. I believe this was the last item left in his cupboard after everything he had done for Indian cricket over the last 20-25 years.
On behalf of the entire team, I am quite pleased that we were able to do this for him. You could see how pleased he was. Rohit expressed gratitude to the occasion for allowing this to happen as well.
During the victory celebrations at the Kensington Oval in Barbados following India’s nerve-racking triumph over South Africa in the final on June 29, Rohit and Virat Kohli picked Rahul Dravid and hurled him in the air.

Dravid’s tenure as head coach has come to an end. BCCI secretary Jay Shah stated that the new head coach would be named soon.
Former opener Gautam Gambhir is poised to follow Rahul Dravid as India’s head coach. The Cricket Advisory Committee has also held interviews for the high-profile position, shortlisting Gambhir and former India women’s coach W V Raman.
A selector would also be appointed shortly, added Shah, who is in the Caribbean with the India side that won the T20 World Cup championship on Saturday, defeating South Africa by seven runs in the final.
“Both India’s coach as well as selector appointments will be made soon. CAC has interviewed and shortlisted two candidates, and whatever decision they make once in Mumbai will be followed. VVS Laxman will travel to Zimbabwe, but a new coach will be appointed following the Sri Lanka series,” Shah stated.
