Elite Power Hitter Rafael Devers Season Ending Move

The Boston Red Sox Rafael Devers made history on Sunday afternoon.

With the Boston Red Sox in a shaky September position, this afternoon’s move to put Rafael Devers on the 10-day injured list puts things in perspective. Officially placed today on the 10-day injured list for an inflamed left shoulder, Rafael Devers says goodbye to the 2024 season for the Boston Red Sox. Unless of course, a miracle unfolds in the next nine days.

For the Red Sox, Devers, in 138 games this season, has hit .272 with 28 home runs and 83 RBIs playing third base for most of the games and the occasional moonlight at DH.  With the Sox five games behind the Twins for a spot at the wildcard, the game today was postponed due to rain. Will this give Boston a chance to rest and come out ahead when they meet Sunday?

Rafael Devers has been an exceptional young athlete for Boston this year, ranking as an elite hitter each season it says a lot that Cora and the Sox have placed him on the injured list. First, it says the clubhouse cares about Devers and not wanting to push him while he is in pain is a supportive thing to do.

Secondly, it says that they are losing steam and Boston isn’t fighting with everything they’ve got to be in the wildcard seat when the season ends in nine days. Surely Devers is hurt, although with the break of a rain delay today should Boston have given him the time to rest and reevaluate tomorrow? Everything is on the line for them.

Hits Win Baseball Games

With Rafael Devers on the bench, Alex Cora will have to change the line-up. The Red Sox called up Mickey Gasper from their Triple-A WooSox as he is standing strong with  .328/.439/.531 with 12 home runs this season in Worcester. Fans can only hope that Gasper can step into the professional arena and crush the expectations in the next few games.

That is what Boston needs, a fire lit under them. Is Gasper the one to spark the Red Sox into an eight-game win streak? Probably not as he won’t see much playing time. So who can rally to the Red Sox with Rafael Devers on the IL, there will be firm reliance on Jarren Duran’s .284 AVG and Tyler O’Neil’s home runs.

Calling It Quits Or Holding On

If a miraculous situation occurs and the Red Sox win their next eight games in nine days, bearing other teams lose like the Twins, Devers may be well rested walking into the playoffs. But, if you have watched a Red Sox game this August or September, you have seen the quality of play Boston is putting out: below average.

There isn’t much grit, thirst, or power left in these players or as a team. With Rafael Devers on the 10-day injured list, the team looks a bit different. A bit quieter, a bit vulnerable. So it will take the Twins, and Mariners losing along with the Tigers to create a ‘parting of the Red Sea’ situation granting access to the wildcard position.
