The Queen’s Club Championships continued today from the exact point where it stopped yesterday. Alejandro Tabilo and Alejandro Davidovich Fokina had their suspended match resumed at the point where Tabilo was one break ahead of the Spaniard in the third and deciding set. Tabilo went on to defeat Davidovich Fokina 6-1 in the deciding set.
The other Queen’s Club matches for the day included a clash between Lorenzo Musetti and the winner of the just concluded Libema Open, Alex De Minaur, the 2024 French Open champion, Carlos Alcaraz, and Francisco Cerundolo, 5-time Queen’s Club champion, Andy Murray, and Alexei Popyrin, and a host of other highly rated clashes.
Musetti Upsets 2nd Seed Alex De Minaur
Alex De Minaur started his Queen’s Club campaign by racing to a three-breakpoints lead in the first game of the first set. He eventually broke Lorenzo Musetti’s serve two points later. Musetti came back immediately after, replying with a break of the Australian’s serve to get back on serve.
De Minaur then broke the Italian’s serve a second time in the third game and a third time in the fifth game to lead 4-1 comfortably. De Minaur broke his serve a fourth time in the seventh game to win the set 6-1.
Alex De Minaur continued ruthlessly in the second set, nearly breaking Musetti’s serve in the second game of the set. In the fifth game of the set, the Australian faltered and Musetti broke his serve. The Italian then stayed on serve to win the set 6-4.
Lorenzo Musetti upped his game in the third set, breaking the Libema Open winner’s serve in the first game of the deciding set, snatching the Queen’s Club second-round spot from the Australian’s hands. The Italian sealed the win with a second break of the Australian’s serve and went on to serve out the match.
Taylor Fritz’s Queen’s Club Challenge On Track
The 26-year-old Taylor Fritz is chasing his eighth ATP tour-level singles title in the 2024 Queen’s Club. The Queen’s Club paired the American with Japanese Taro Daniel. In the third game of the first set, the American had to fight off a Taro Daniel breakpoint to hold his serve.
In the sixth game, Daniel saved two breakpoints and was this close to holding serve before capitulating to a Fritz break of his serve. Fritz went on to serve out the first set 6-3. Both players improved their serves in the second set with Daniel holding to love in the fifth game.
However, in the seventh game, Taylor Fritz broke the Japanese professional’s serve to hold a set and a breakpoint lead over Daniel. Two games later, Fritz grabbed the scruff of Daniel’s neck again and after watching two breakpoints saved, broke Daniel’s serve to win the match and enter the Queen’s Club second round.
Matteo Arnaldi Seals Comeback Victory
Matteo Arnaldi’s Queen’s Club campaign seemed to be one with a quick exit as he offered up a quick break of his serve to Ugo Humbert in the second game of the first set. The Italian stepped up his game after that, but Humbert held serve to put one foot in the Queen’s Club second round.
Arnaldi wiped off that foot in the second set as he broke Humbert’s serve in the second game and pulled out a double break in the fourth game to lead 4-0. The Italian then served out the set to a comfortable equalizer with a 6-1 second-set score.
The third set was more competitive than the earlier two. Both players held serve until Matteo Arnaldi served them into a deciding tiebreak. The tiebreak was as competitive as the third set with no player winning two points in a row. Arnaldi eventually won the last two points to win the tiebreak 8-6 and qualify for the Queen’s Club second round.
