Preview: No. 2 Texas Longhorns Challenge UTSA Roadrunners

Week 3 looks pretty good for the Texas Longhorns. The No. 2 ranked team faces off against another unranked team a la UTSA this week. Texas is riding high off some spectacular opening wins. UTSA started their season strong but hit a stumble last week against Texas State. This weekend both teams and their fans converge on the Darrell K. Royal-Texas Memorial Stadium in Austin, Texas. The Texas Longhorns shouldn’t count their chickens of course; but maybe expect to see a game closer to Colorado State than Michigan.

Prior Performances

Week 1 went off with a bang for the Texas Longhorns and a pop for the UTSA Roadrunners. Kennesaw State was taken down by UTSA 28-16. Like the Longhorns, the Roadrunners established an early lead and never lost it. Highlights from that game show a strong defense and a fairly cohesive team. Their performance the following week at Bobcat Stadium in San Marcos is another story.

Week 2 went well for Texas, but UTSA fell to Texas State 10-49. It can’t feel good to face off against the Texas Longhorns immediately after that. Still, the Roadrunners had a few reasons to smile that day. Their Backup Quarterback Eddie Lee Marburger came in and scored a touchdown and an interception. Their passing game was clearly on point that day. Can the UTSA Roadrunners’ defense gather their wits and withstand Texas’ proven offense?

Brief Analysis

What can we expect to see from both teams and how they will fare on Saturday? A lot is expected of Texas, especially with the new AP poll ranking them at No. 2. UTSA might be ranked in their own conference, but they’ll be small potatoes here.

Texas Longhorns

Texas has been showing an overwhelming amount of offense so far, shutting out its first opponents 52-0. The horror doesn’t end there for the Roadrunners. The Longhorns took down former champions the Michigan Wolverines on their own turf. Quarterback Quinn Ewers played the entire game. Their running game was strong, their passing game was strong, and Texas ended up winning 31-12.

UTSA Roadrunners

One thing that UTSA has in common with Texas is quarterback strength. Quarterback Owen McCown hit 81 passing yards and 2 touchdowns in the Kennesaw State game. Despite losing the I-35 Showdown, both UTSA Quarterbacks together completed over 252 pass yards. It’s still early in the season. Regardless of Saturday’s outcome, the Roadrunners are considered playoff contenders.

Final Thoughts

Look forward to astronomical performances from Texas Longhorns Quarterback Quinn Ewers and UTSA Roadrunners Quarterback Owen McCown. Both teams have formidable Backups should they be called upon as well. Stellar performances by key players like Wide Receivers Johntay Cook and Ryan Wingo, for example. NFL Draft Prospects like Kelvin Banks Jr. and Isaiah Bond are sure to put in work. Expect solid support from both the linemen and the freshmen class on the Texas Longhorns’ side.

The UTSA Roadrunners are in for quite the battle this weekend. Facing down this Texas team will be a good opportunity for UTSA to flex their muscles. The odds are against them, but isn’t that how all great underdog stories begin?

For his part, Steve Sarkisian is warning the Texas Longhorns players: take nothing for granted.

“We’ve got a really good team. But we’re entitled to nothing. We’re going to earn everything. And we’re going to have to earn the victory here Saturday night.”

Well said, Coach.
