Breaking News: Premier League Clubs Vote To Continue To Operate VAR In The League

In 2019, we saw the introduction the Video Assistant Referee technology in the English Premier League. The goal was to eliminate errors that tainted match results by helping referees avoid clear and obvious errors.
For the most part, VAR in the league has worked well. Goals that would have otherwise been denied have been given. Red card offenses that referees miss in real time can be reviewed, and appropriate action can be taken.
On the other hand, Video Assistant Referee in the EPL has also not been perfect. There have been notable mistakes made, leading to frustration and questioning of its use and need. Thus there was a motion to scrap VAR in the League and clubs took a vote.
So, what is the future hold for video assistant referee technology in the English Premier League?

After years of use, every EPL club can point to a moment where VAR could have done better in their favor. One club that seems to have been the victim of many VAR controversies this season is Wolver Hampton Wanderers.
Led by their chairman, Wolves submitted a motion to abandon VAR in the Premier League. For this Motion to succeed, a total of 14 clubs among the 20 in the EPL were needed to vote in favor. Ultimately, clubs voted unanimously (19-1) to keep the technology.

While clubs voted to keep VAR operational in the EPL, this is not to mean they believe it’s perfect. There was a consensus that improvements should be made to make the technology more favorable for the game and supporters.
As part of the Annual General meeting, clubs agreed that they along with PGMOL and the Premier League have critical roles to play to enhance the efficacy and reputation of VAR in the EPL.

Key Areas of Improvement

Discussion on improving VAR in the EPL highlighted six key areas of improvement. They include:
• Ensuring the technology delivers more accurate and consistent results
• Introducing semi-automated offside technology (SAOT) to reduce delays to the game
• Enhancing fan experience by reducing delays, offering big screen replays, and through in-stadium announcements by referees
• Offering expanded communication through initiatives such as ‘Match Officials Mic’d Up’ to improve transparency
• Clarifying the role of VAR in the league through a fan and stakeholder VAR public awareness campaign

Great Move or Big Mistake?

Even with the proposed changes, VAR in the league  will still face resistance. However, the idea of scrapping it off completely would have taken the EPL to the dark ages.
While it has its faults, VAR in the league is a powerful tool. Beyond improving decision-making, it also helps curb indiscipline in the sport. So, with the proposed changes, expect VAR in the league to be more effective and controversies to reduce.
However, it will still remain to be far from perfect. Clubs, coaches, players, and fans will still have to be patient and tolerant as the technology improves.
