Premier League Reveals New Rule for the 24/25 season

Premier League Summer Transfer Window Opens Ahead of New 2024-25 Season

The Premier League is set to return on the 16th of August, with Manchester United kicking off the season hosting Fulham. However, as the new season approaches, a set of new rules have been put in place. The rules are made to cover the 2024/25 campaign. Moreover, they are made as an update to the last season’s set of rules.

The 2023/24 season had a lot of in-game errors. This led to the Professional Game Match Officials Limited (PGMOL) releasing statements of apologies for those affected. Now with the new season approaching, the Premier League has made an effort to introduce new systems and rules. The rules will focus on Officiating, Goal review, and time stoppages.

Stoppage time is now expected to be shorter. It’ll only be added if a goal Celebration exceeds more than 30 seconds. The stoppage time is the extra minutes added to games after each half has been exhausted.

The last Premier League season witnessed a lot of lengthy-time being added to Stoppage time. Some cases saw 9 minutes being added, others saw 10, and 11 minutes. This eventually became pivotal for a team in need of a desperate goal to secure one or more worse turn the game around. A big example was the Chelsea Man United game. The game saw United leading 3-2 until 99 minutes, where Chelsea equalized with two goals in just two minutes.

Premier League Rule on Offsides

Semi-automated offsides are slated to start after September’s international breaks. The new system will help enhance the efficiency of detecting offsides. The last Premier League season saw a lot of erroneous decisions relating to offsides. A typical one was a falsely flagged goal by Luis Diaz against Tottenham Hotspur. The goal was deemed offside but after proper check, it was seen to be onside with several meters. Unfortunately for the Reds, they ended up losing the game 2-1

Rules on Players

Players other than captains will be automatically carded, if they challenge the referees, over any issue. This rule was made to maintain order on the pitch. And it’s now expected that every player stays off confronting the referees. This is except only the captains. The leaders are the only ones meant to stand in the gap for the team. This rule was made in the Euro 2024. The outcome came with a lot of players yellow yellow-carded for ignorance of the rule. Last season without the rule, saw a lot of chaos and challenges with referees and players. This new Premier League season will be different.

Rules on Fouls

The Referees will no longer give a yellow card for unintentional handballs. This rule is meant to cover the aspect of intent in the game. A lot of players suffered the consequences of nondeliberate fouls and handballs. This consequence is a yellow card that proceeds to badly affect the game dynamics. Eventually, players carded are unable to play with freedom, as they would fear mistakes leading to another card. With this rule in play, players will experience more leniency on the pitch
