Against all odds, the Premier League – the top league in English football – could be coming to the United States in just a few months. Although the US has its very own professional league, the Major Soccer League (MLS), the Prem could still host a few matches on America’s home soil for the 2024-2025 season.
But the real question is – why? England has numerous football grounds, with ‘football’ – not soccer – being arguably the most well-known and highly played sport for kids and adults throughout the country. There are football stadiums, grounds, and pitches everywhere you look, even in crowded cities like London and Manchester.

Liverpool Could Get Premier League Matches in the USA
Liverpool, one of the teams that finished in the top three spots last season in the EPL, has thought about hosting some of their matches in the Big Apple. Yes, you read that right – the Reds want to have some of their home games in the Premier League be hosted in the bustling city of New York City in the United States next season.
Although there are no plans as of yet for any of the upcoming EPL matches for the 2024-2025 campaign to be played outside of the United Kingdom, FIFA has ruled that fixtures are now allowed to be played outside of the home country for the domestic league. Therefore, games could potentially be played in the United States for regular fixtures during the year.
Werner, the Liverpool chairman, seems steadfast in his decision to host at least one match on America’s home soil for next year.
‘I’m determined one day to have a Premier League game be played in New York City. I even have a sort of crazy idea that there would be a day where we play one game in Tokyo, one game a few hours later in Los Angeles, and one game a few hours later in Rio….make it a sort of day where football, where the Premier League, is celebrated.’
It seems as if the Liverpool chairman wants to be able to have PL matches all over the world, increasing viewership in certain time zones and giving the entire world something to watch throughout the day.
Is this realistic? Probably not. United Kingdom fans will not be able to travel to see their home matches, players would have to go through extremely long travel days, or weeks, to play matches, and the costs would be astronomical. The logistics would involve finding new stadiums, getting away with the ‘home’ and ‘away’ advantages, and player welfare concerns.
Premier League 2024-2025 Season
So, what can we expect for next season in the Premier League, if we can’t expect a ‘global’ league involving matches in every continent?
We can expect a lot of change. There still might be a match or two held elsewhere from England if FIFA approves the rule.
Plus, players have already been transferred and traded during the summer window. Liverpool welcomed their new coach, Arne Slot, as Jurgen Klopp retired this season from being the REeds’ manager. Chelsea is looking to purchase new players, Newcastle is signing a new defender, and Manchester City wants to keep many of the same players to win the league, yet again, in the upcoming season.
