Could Potter Be the Surprise Replacement for Southgate at England in 2024?

Graham Potter was among one of the most highly-lauded Premier League managers then. But poor results with both Chelsa and Brighton have had fans and pundits turn against him in recent months. However, despite a recent drop in public opinion and managerial confidence, there is a chance that he could be the next in line for the coveted England job for the men’s team.

The women’s English side is led by Sarina Wiegman, a powerful Dutch coach who has led the Lionesses to multiple wins, trophies, and championships. But the men’s team needs a new gaffer who can use his rule, prowess, and tactical organization to help the English Men’s national team win more trophies, make it to international competitions, and succeed on the world’s biggest stage.

Could Potter Get The England Job?

Graham Potter could potentially be next in line to get the England job, but only if he puts on pause his current reign in the Premier League. Since he left the Blues back in the beginning of 2023, he hasn’t taken another managerial role – a confusing tactic, considering he went almost right from Brighton to Chelsea without wasting any time.

Many people have speculated that he could be out of the game, he was not offered any new roles, or he has something bigger planned. He has been linked with tons of prestigious opportunities throughout the last year and a half, so the real reason is that he must be waiting for something bigger and better – the England job.

Potter’s conscious decision to wait and not take another job as a Premier League manager means that he has something big in the works. He could have also gone to another country and coached for another domestic league, like Serie A for Napoli, or even go back to his old team in Brighton, England.

Now, fans, pundits, coaches, players, and commentators all speculate that Potter is the number one man for the England job.

Despite being the front-runner for the men’s national team open position, some people are surprised that they want him as their head coach. After All, he didn’t do too well in the Brighton head role or as the manager of Chelsea, making him a shocking pick to be the man in charge for the England national team.

At Chelsea, Potter Only won 12 out of 31 matches, which could be a red flag for a potential signing. Chelsea finished in 12th place with Potter in charge, making it their lowest-ever finish in the Premier League since the club was formed.

England has to be careful if they are considering bringing Potter in for the job once Southgate leaves. Currently, they are on the road to the Euro 2024 competition that will see them up against some of the toughest competition in the world, like Germany, France, and the Netherlands.

Will Potter secure the job for next year? Potentially – since he has not rushed back into a coaching role in the last year and some change, this means that he has his spot open in case England comes calling. Although this is a huge gamble to be out of work for such a long time, it means that he could bump himself up on the list of potential replacements for Southgate as the 2024 year comes to a close.
