Postecoglou has shared his views on what Tottenham needs to do for him to bring success to the team and also put a stop to the team’s long trophy dry spell.
Postecoglou New Vision
Postecoglou stated that “change has to happen” at Tottenham. Securing trophies throughout his managerial career with his team playing an enticing style of football. Daniel Levy and Tottenham are both hoping Postecoglou would lead the team to its glory.
His first season in Tottenham showed that it’s not going to be a smooth ride for him and the team in their quest to conquer the English Premier League. Although, they started the season well and stayed glued to the top 5 in the EPL standings.
Spurs are currently 5th on the English Premier League table and seven points behind Aston Villa who are currently in the 4th position. Arsenal and Liverpool undergoing changes under Mikel Arteta and Jurgen Klopp who are currently in 1st (Arsenal) and 3rd (Liverpool) positions. Postecoglou referred to both teams pointing out not many differences between managers leading their teams to good standings on the table. Also reveals that the team still has a long way to go to achieve greater results in their journey.
Embracing Change
“We need change, change has to happen,” stated by Postecoglou. “You can’t want to change course, and dramatically expect everything to happen in a day we went down from one direction and now we’re moving to a whole new direction. It’s not just going to happen so…
We’ve had two transfer windows and we’ve seen some development on players, definitely, but when i say we still have a long way to go, that’s exactly what I’m talking about. We can’t expect to achieve bigger changes while having everyone instantly on board. It’s not about the lack of effort. It’s just that we play in a certain way, we train in a certain way with a specific mindset which is not for everyone.
Likewise looking at Arsenal or Liverpool, at the beginning of their journey you’d see not too much difference in both teams almost unrecognizable. That’s what happens when you make changes. If you’re staying to the same plan and course there would be consistency, but we have taken a major turn here, so that’s definitely the case here.
For me Tottenham won’t be tasting any victory this season in terms of trophies but hopefully we would next season. “It’s glaring that we’re not ready right now but would we be ready next season? that’s the bigger question” he admitted that he would keep trying to bring the team together to achieve a greater goal together and that’s my responsibility.
One certain thing is that Postecoglou truly believes in himself and he will continue to stay true to his path that has brought him plenty of success throughout his managerial career.
“For instance i haven’t had anything that’s come along my path that has shown me that I need to change,” said Postecoglou when asked how early on he decided on his football philosophy. “So like anything in life, once you feel like something is working for you, something you believe in, brings success – and it does – you take that forward.
“Maybe the English Premier League is a step too far, mate. Who knows? Maybe, maybe but I will still be on that hill, wounded, my dying breath ‘saying ‘I believe, I do believe’. But I do, I really do mate. And as long as I’m here that’s what you will see. You will see this team playing the way I want it to.”
