On the final day of the regular season, the Portland Trail Blazers signed Head Coach Chauncey Billups to a multiyear contract extension. He had no more guaranteed years left on his contract. What solidified the team’s belief in Billups is how they played over the last three months. He will remain with the franchise through the 2027-2028 season.

Since January 19, the Blazers are 22-18 and are top five in the league in offense and defense over that span. The Portland Trail Blazers looked lifeless, but Billups deserves credit for their turnaround in the second half of the regular season. Will the Portland Trail Blazers be able to close out the regular season on a high note?

Portland Trail Blazers Season Summary

Even though the Blazers will miss the NBA Playoffs for the fourth consecutive season, they have pieces to build with. Those players include Small Forward Deni Avdija, Guard Scoot Henderson, and Shooting Guard Shaedon Sharpe.

The Trail Blazers are 35-46 heading into their season finale against the Los Angeles Lakers. They have secured at least a 14-win turnaround this year. Portland’s offense is 22nd in points scored, 26th in field goal percentage, and 27th in three-point percentage. Portland’s defense has been the stronger part of its team this season. They are 15th in points allowed, 20th in opposing field goal percentage, and 17th in three-point percentage.

Final Thoughts

Even though the Portland Trail Blazers will be at home for the postseason, they have a roster that will continue improving for years to come. Billups will seek to build upon a strong second half next season. With his job security, not an issue Billups will look to continue adding to his Hall of Fame resume.
