Portimao Secures MotoGP Hosting Rights Until 2026

The famous Portimao circuit, also known as the Autodromo Internacional do Algarve, will continue staging MotoGP races in 2025 and 2026 as a result of a new two-year contract signed. This announcement does remove a fear MotoGP single Portuguese racer Miguel Oliveira recently stated he was worried that the Portuguese Grand Prix was to be eliminated.

With the signing of this continued relationship, Portimao will remain a staple circuit on the MotoGP schedule for yet another year, a move that will continue to captivate Portuguese fans and audiences worldwide.

Machado, Secretary of State for Tourism, said that MotoGP is not just a sports event but a tool for promoting Portugal as a tourism destination. He pointed out that the MotoGP is viewed in over 200 territories and is followed by more than 500 million fans worldwide. He said that

“We are talking about an event that has a unique ability to promote and project Portugal as a tourist destination and as an organizer of major sporting events,

He also underlined that his event creates economic value for the Algarve region. Machado stated that

It also has an immediate economic impact on the regional economy, which is equally significant, since this is an event that attracts thousands of people over several days, including spectators and staff from the competing teams.

Pride in Portimao’s MotoGP Status

Portuguese racing circuit CEO Jaime Costa said he is “very proud” to have clinched the MotoGP round at Portimao for the next two years. Costa applauded the hard work and commitment to making the Portuguese event a spectacular addition to the MotoGP calendar since hosting the race in 2020. According to Costa, the new planned two-year contract, with the apparent intent to expand and make greater improvements to the fan experience, should prove beneficial in attracting more fans and visitors to the circuit and the area as a whole.

The chief executive officer of Dorna Sports, the company that owns the rights to MotoGP, was delighted that Portimao would continue to host the event. He recalled the progress of the event during MotoGP at Algarve Circuit and expressed satisfaction with its round growth as it gained popularity among fans and participants. Ezpeleta also highlighted the social, economic, and sporting values the race brings to the region.
