Pittsburgh Steelers Bringing Back Starting Cornerback Months Domestic Assault Case

The Pittsburgh Steelers are apparently desperate for cornerback depth. While the defense boasts some of the best players in the game, the secondary has left much to be desired. Joey Porter Jr.’s emergence has helped, but the team still needs quality starters on the roster. The team is bringing back a familiar face despite some off-the-field drama this offseason. Pittsburgh is bringing back cornerback Cam Sutton.

Cam Sutton is signing a one-year deal with the Pittsburgh Steelers. From 2017-22, Sutton played for the Steel City and was a solid starter for the team. This earned him a three-year, $33 million free-agency deal from the Detroit Lions. He struggled mightily, allowing a career-high 1,173 receiving yards and eight touchdowns. In the offseason, he was arrested in a domestic assault case, and the Lions released him.

The Pittsburgh Steelers didn’t wait long to bring him back. From an on-the-field standpoint, it isn’t hard to see why. In his six seasons with Pittsburgh, he was the starting slot corner and was solid in coverage. He only allowed a 50.7% catch rate. The position may have been the reason for his struggles. Detroit used him as a boundary corner when it seems his better position is in the slot.

Good Or Bad Signing?

Any time a player has an off-the-field issue, especially domestic assault, it is tricky to know how to feel about the signing. From a strictly on-the-field sense, this is a great signing for the Pittsburgh Steelers. Cam Sutton knows the system. He knows the coaches, and they know what to expect from him. There is a great chance he has a bounce-back season. However, the domestic assault case does bring questions. The NFL could suspend him for a time if they choose, and the team may decide to go in a different direction.

Steelers Going All In

The Pittsburgh Steelers are serious about the 2024 season. While Mike Tomlin wants to keep his streak of winning seasons alive, this team might have eyes on a bigger prize. If the offense can make strides from last season, this team should succeed. They were a dumpster fire on offense last year and still made it to the postseason.

If Russell Wilson or Justin Fields can run a competent offense, this team could be the one no one wants to play in the playoffs. We already know TJ Watt’s game-breaking ability. If he can have the support of a whole team around him, this will be a team to watch in 2024.
