The Pittsburgh Steelers have one of the most talented rosters in the NFL, except at one position: quarterback. After Kenny Pickett did not work out, the team tried a combination of Russell Wilson and Justin Fields. It yielded similar results. As of now, longtime Steelers Mason Rudolph is signed, but there is no clear starter. One name that has been floated out there is Aaron Rodgers. Steelers defensive lineman Cam Heyward was asked about Rodgers on his podcast and he has some strong words about the situation.
Pittsburgh Steelers Cam Heyward On Aaron Rodgers
Many times, when a player is a free agent, others try to recruit him to the team. Heyward said on his “Not Just Football” podcast that he is not going to great lengths to get the former MVP to come to Pittsburgh.
“I ain’t doing that darkness retreat. I don’t need any of that crap. Either you want to be a Pittsburgh Steeler or you don’t. It’s that simple. That’s the pitch. If you want me to recruit, that’s the recruiting pitch. Pittsburgh Steelers. If you want to be part of it, so be it. If you don’t, no skin off my back.”
Take it or leave it is the message. Heyward has been through many quarterbacks with the Pittsburgh Steelers, and he knows the team can win with anyone under center. Heyward isn’t the only player who isn’t bending over backward trying to bring Rodgers in. Newly acquired wide receiver DK Metcalf had this to say in a recent interview.
“This is a historic organization. They’ve done the recruiting before I even got here, so whoever wants to come here and try to win as many games as we can, they can join us. But if not, good luck on the other side.”
What Will The Team Do At QB?
While Rodgers may not be the answer, the team does have a quarterback problem. They have plenty of weapons on the offensive side of the ball but haven’t signed anyone besides Rudolph, who slates to be more of a backup. Fields has signed with the New York Jets, and the team hasn’t exactly been enthusiastic about bringing back Wilson. They could look to the draft but are not in a position to get one of the top prospects.
With that said, it is interesting that the members of the Pittsburgh Steelers aren’t spending a ton of energy trying to bring Rodgers to the team. They would be happy to have him but are ready to play football, not try and woo a player to join them. It will be interesting to see where Rodgers ends up and who the Steelers’ starter is in week 1 in 2025.
