Pittsburgh Steelers Bring In Former Cowboys Quarterback For Workout

Pittsburgh Steelers Ben DiNucci, fight

The Pittsburgh Steelers have done a complete makeover on their quarterback room. Kenny Pickett did not blossom into a quality starter, and the team traded him to the Eagles in the offseason. Russell Wilson and Justin Fields replace the former first-round pick. However, the team may not be done adding quarterbacks to the roster. The Steelers brought in former Dallas Cowboys quarterback Ben DiNucci for a workout on Tuesday.

Franchises often have long memories. This workout may seem strange, but Ben DiNucci has a history with the team. In 2020, DiNucci made his only career start for the Dallas Cowboys in a game against the Pittsburgh Steelers. While the Steelers prevailed in that game, the former seventh-round pick carved up the defense. He went 23-of-43 for 219 yards in a 24-19 loss, but he was praised for keeping the game close against the then-undefeated Steelers.

The Pittsburgh Steelers already have four quarterbacks on their roster. On top of acquiring Wilson and Fields this offseason, the team also signed Kyle Allen in free agency. After the draft, they signed former UCF quarterback John Rhys Plumlee as an undrafted free agent. It is unclear if the team is looking to bring Ben DiNucci onto the roster or is simply doing their due diligence. While the NFL did increase the number of quarterbacks the team can have on a roster, five seems like overkill.

2024 Outlook

The Pittsburgh Steelers have a floor of competency as a franchise. They will be competitive in games, but as always, it isn’t going to be easy to have a winning record. The AFC North is always tough, and this year is no different. Baltimore has the reigning MVP, Lamar Jackson. Cleveland and Cincinnati are coming off injury-riddled seasons and should be better equipped to take down the top teams in 2024. While it can be easy to dismiss the Steelers, there is some reason for optimism.

First off, Russell Wilson didn’t have as bad of a season as people think. While he wasn’t playing at an MVP level, more of the problem seemed to be the talent around him. The defense is still led by perennial Defensive Player of the Year TJ Watt. Minkah Fitzpatrick is still one of the best safeties in the league, and the team added linebacker Patrick Queen in free agency. If the offense can be middle-of-the-road, they could finish with a winning record once again.

This is the type of news that happens a lot in training camp. Teams bring in veterans for workouts all the time, whether they are meaning to sign them or not. The Pittsburgh Steelers are doing what good teams do: their due diligence. Can the Mike Tomlin and the Steelers continue the streak of winning seasons in 2024?
