Pittsburgh Pirates Trade for Isiah Kiner-Falefa Ahead of 2024 Trade Deadline

Isiah Kiner-Falefa, Toronto Blue Jays, Pittsburgh Pirates

The Pittsburgh Pirates are looking to step up as contenders for the 2024 postseason and they have reportedly made a move to trade for superutilityman Isiah Kiner-Falefa from the Toronto Blue Jays in exchange for Double-A outfielder Charles McAdoo. This trade signals where both teams stand as we hit the final stretch of the 2024 MLB Trade Deadline so let’s take a closer look into what this individual move does for each team going forward.

What does adding Isiah Kiner-Falefa do for the Pittsburgh Pirates?

The Pittsburgh Pirates will have Isiah Kiner-Falefa for more than just a rental as he is under contract for the 2025 season as well, as he signed a two-year, $15 million contract with the Toronto Blue Jays this offseason. What he does is add some offense to a Pittsburgh Pirates’ lineup that has been one of the more underwhelming as they ranked 26th in batting average, 27th in on base percentage and 28th in OPS. Now with the trade for Isiah Kiner-Falefa as well as Miami Marlins outfielder Bryan De La Cruz, they have revamped their offense a bit. It appears as though IKF is going to be the second baseman for the team, replacing Jared Triolo.

Kiner-Falefa has been performing well this season with a .292/.338/.420 slash line with seven home runs, 33 RBIs, 32 runs scored and three steals on four attempts. He can really provide a spark with his ability to hit and play all over the field so this is something that the Pittsburgh Pirates can benefit from. With a young left side of the infield of third baseman Ke’Bryan Hayes and shortstop Oneil Cruz, this defense in the infield could be great for the future.

What does this mean for the Toronto Blue Jays?

This Toronto Blue Jays team is looking towards the future as they have traded multiple players at the trade deadline. This helps as McAdoo has been dominating the minors since being drafted in the 13th round of the 2023 MLB draft. He has a .932 OPS between A+ and Double-A this season and there is a possibility that he will be competing for a starting spot in the big leagues next season. There is a lot of upside and room for development but this is a great addition to a team seemingly hitting the reset button right now.
