Pittsburgh Penguins: Where Does Valtteri Puustinen Fit In the 2024-2025 Plans?

Pittsburgh Penguins Valtteri Puustinen

The Pittsburgh Penguins will begin training camp for the 2024-2025 very soon. Pittsburgh will have its first preseason game against the Buffalo Sabres on September 21. The Penguins have a lot of players who are on the bubble to make the Opening Night roster, including Valtteri Puustinen. He is 25 years old and played for the Wilkes-Barre/Scranton Penguins in the AHL last season. Puustinen also played for the Pittsburgh Penguins a season ago.

Not Projected To Be On Opening Night Roster

Last year, Valtteri Puustinen was not on the opening night roster for the Pittsburgh Penguins, but he played a lot. Puustinen appeared in 52 games last season with Pittsburgh and only appeared in 24 games with Wilkes-Barre/Scranton. In the 52 games with Pittsburgh, he scored five goals and recorded 15 assists, along with a plus/minus rating of 4. In only 24 games with Wilkes-Barre/Scranton, he scored five goals as well. It will be interesting to see if he were to start 2024-2025 in the minors compared to the big club. Hooks Orpik of pensburgh.com thinks Valtteri Puustinen will be an interesting watch in training camp. He said:

“Puustinen has had an uneven career. He was drafted late and popped into view with some great seasons in Finland. Then he was buried in the AHL for two years and almost an afterthought before getting a chance last season in the NHL and making the most of it. But again, with players like Glass, McGroarty, Anthony Beauvillier, Kevin Hayes and Blake Lizotte all new to the organization, where does that leave Puustinen?”

The lines for the 2024-2025 season for the Pittsburgh Penguins will be interesting. The projected first line will be Sidney Crosby, Rickard Rakell, and Bryan Rust. For the second line, it is projected to be Michael Bunting, Evgeni Malkin, and rookie Rutger McGroarty. As for the third line, it is projected to be Drew O’Connor, Kevin Hayes, and Cody Glass. The projected fourth line for the Pittsburgh Penguins will be Blake Lizotte, Lars Eller, and Noel Acciari. It will be interesting to see who the Pittsburgh Penguins keep as the 13th forward on the roster. Valtteri Puustinen may be the best forward after the first 12 on the roster.

However, it would be better for him to play with the Wilkes-Barre/Scranton Penguins in the AHL rather than sitting in the press box on a night-to-night basis. He is not the only young player on the Pittsburgh Penguins roster to watch out for during training camp. Anthony Beauviller might be the 13th forward on the roster because he has played in the NHL before with the Nashville Predators and the New York Islanders. Beauviller is coming off a major injury last season. Anthony Beauviller and Valtteri Puustinen will fight for play time this season with the Pittsburgh Penguins.
