The Pittsburgh Penguins enter the 2024-2025 season with high expectations once again. The biggest story has been Sidney Crosby not receiving a contract extension yet, but defenseman Marcus Pettersson is also entering the final year of his contract. Pettersson has been a very important player on the Pittsburgh Penguins blueline. His cap hit will be north of $4 million this season, according to Spotrac. Pittsburgh will need to give him a new contract as he is only 28 years old.
Potential Trade Deadline Piece
There is a chance that if the Pittsburgh Penguins are out of the playoff race by the trade deadline, Marcus Pettersson could be a major trade chip to contending teams. In 82 games played last season for Pittsburgh, he scored four goals and recorded 26 assists. His plus/minus ranking was +82. Marcus Pettersson is projected to be on the first defensive pairing unit this season with Erik Karlsson. The other defensive pairings for the 2024-2025 season will be Ryan Graves and Kris Letang and also Matt Grzelcyk and Sebastian Aho.
Jack St. Ivany and Ryan Shea will be players to watch for during training camp. If Pettersson were to be traded this season, it might also give Owen Pickering a chance to get more play time with the Pittsburgh Penguins. Pickering is most likely going to start the 2024-2025 season with the Wilkes-Barre/Scranton Penguins in the AHL. He was a first-round selection for Pittsburgh in the 2022 NHL Draft. Owen Pickering played for the last few seasons with the Swift Current Broncos in the WHL.
The Detroit Red Wings, the Minnesota Wild, and the Tampa Bay Lightning could be a few teams that would potentially trade for Petterson at the trade deadline if Pittsburgh is out of it. Some could argue that Pettersson is the best two-way defenseman on the roster and not Kris Letang and Erik Karlsson. The blue line a season ago was a major question mark for Pittsburgh. Some other issues with the team were goaltending and also the power play.
It would be good news if Pettersson received a new contract before the end of the 2024-2025 season with the Pittsburgh Penguins. However, if he were to get a new contract before Sidney Crosby would, it would feel like a major alarm for the team. There is also a chance that Pettersson may not be traded at the NHL trade deadline. However, would the Penguins be willing to let him walk for nothing if they are out of the playoff race? Only time will tell about his future with the club. This is a huge 2024-2025 season upcoming for Pittsburgh and they need to get back into the playoffs.
