Pittsburgh Penguins: Retired Player Joe Pavelski Attends Morning Skate

Pittsburgh Penguins Joe Pavelski

The Pittsburgh Penguins had their third consecutive day of practice on Friday. Pittsburgh will have its first preseason game on Saturday against the Buffalo Sabres. It will be interesting to see who head coach Mike Sullivan decides to put in the lineup for that game. The Penguins have a lot of players on the training camp roster for now, but it will be interesting to see who makes the opening night roster. On Friday, there was a surprise at training camp for the Pittsburgh Penguins. Retired NHL player, Joe Pavelski, was at the Pittsburgh Penguins morning skate with Kyle Dubas and Jason Speeza. They are both members of the front office for the Penguins.

What Does This Mean?

Joe Pavelski is 40 years old and he just retired from the NHL. He played with the San Jose Sharks and the Dallas Stars in his NHL career. Pavelski was on the 2016 San Jose team that lost to Sidney Crosby and the Pittsburgh Penguins in the NHL Stanley Cup Finals in six games. There is no doubt that he is a future Hall of Fame player. In his career, Joe Pavelski played in 1332 games scored 476 goals, and recorded 592 assists, with a total of 1,068 points. His plus/minus in his NHL career was +201.

A season ago with the Dallas Stars in 82 games, he scored 27 goals and recorded 40 assists, along with a plus/minus rating of 12. He helped Dallas reach the Western Conference Finals before losing to the Edmonton Oilers. Pavelski never won a Stanley Cup Title in his NHL career. Would he come out of retirement to play for the Pittsburgh Penguins to try and win one? Or is he just meeting with Dubas and Speeza for potential roles in the Penguins front office for the future? Well, it is possible that Joe Pavelski may wind up joining them in the front office.

Some fans speculated that he would come out of retirement to play for the Penguins this season, but that probably will not happen. The last thing that the Penguins need is another older player on the roster. Kyle Dubas has mentioned time and time again last season about how they needed to get younger. He used his words this offseason by acquiring Rutger McGroarty from the Winnipeg Jets for prospect Brayden Yager. Also, Erik Karlsson, Evgeni Malkin, and Kris Letang are some of the older players on the roster. Rickard Rakell, Marcus Pettersson, and Bryan Rust have also been on the team for a few years.

The odds are that Joe Pavelski could maybe join the Penguins front office or maybe he was just meeting with Dubas and Speeza. It would be a bigger story if he decided to sign a PTO with the team, but that would be highly unlikely. There is no doubt that Pavelski would provide center depth to this hockey team. He would be useful in the power play. Joe Pavelski could be useful as the second-line centerman and have Evgeni Malkin move to the wing also.
