Pittsburgh Penguins: Goaltending Battle Entering 2024 Training Camp

Pittsburgh Penguins

Entering the 2024-2025 season for the Pittsburgh Penguins, one of the biggest issues is the goaltending position. There could be an argument that goaltending was one of the reasons why Pittsburgh has failed to qualify for the playoffs for the past two seasons. In the past, fans have been critical of goalie Tristan Jarry and many wonder if Jarry will be the goalie of the team for much longer. The Pittsburgh Penguins have goaltending depth within the organization. The last effective tandem for the organization was Matt Murray and Marc-Andre Fleury.

Tristan Jarry Is the Starting Goalie For Now

For now, Jarry will be the starting goalie for the Penguins entering the 2024-2025 season. He lost his job to Alex Nedeljkovic toward the end of the 2023-2024 season. It appeared as if the Pittsburgh Penguins were going to head toward a Top-10 pick in the 2024 NHL Draft until Nedeljkovic got hot. The Pittsburgh Penguins were able to be in the playoff race late last season, but they fell short. Jarry has four more years remaining on his contract and it feels as if it is four years too long.

A season ago with the Pittsburgh Penguins, he played in 51 games and started in 48 of them. Jarry had a 19-25-5 record with a .903 save percentage and a 2.91 GAA. As for Alex Nedeljkovic, he played in 38 games and started in 33 of them. Nedeljkovic had an 18-8-7 record with a .902 save percentage and a 2.97 GAA. For some strange reason despite the stats being similar, the Penguins won more with Nedeljkovic in net compared to Jarry. If Alex Nedeljkovic outplays Jarry in training camp, Alex will be the starter and Jarry will be the backup.

Those won’t be the only two goalies that the Pittsburgh Penguins fanbase will want to see in training camp this year. Joel Blomqvist and Sergei Murashov will be the two other goalies who will get a look in training camp for Pittsburgh. Blomqvist and Murashov will be the future goaltending tandem in Pittsburgh, Pennslyvania, but they will start the 2024-2025 season with the Wilkes-Barre/Scranton Penguins in the AHL. That is the best goaltending tandem down in the minor leagues since Matt Murray and Tristan Jarry.

Goaltending is one of the reasons why Sidney Crosby has not received a fair chance to compete for another Stanley Cup Title. There could be a point in the 2024-2025 season where Tristan Jarry gets traded depending on where they are in the standings. Pittsburgh also may have to wait until the 2024-2025 season ends to make a trade. Jarry was in trade rumors all offseason long for the Pittsburgh Penguins. The goalie position will be the most watched battle in training camp.
