Phoenix Suns Sign Tyus Jones to Fill Point Guard Void

Phoenix Suns James Jones

The Phoenix Suns signed NBA free agent point guard Tyus Jones to a one-year, $3.3 million deal, Jones’ agent Kevin Bradbury told ESPN on Saturday. Jones, 28, was arguably the top remaining guard on the NBA free agent market. Jones’ new contract could help him while helping the Suns fill in their point guard void.

According to Adrian Wojnarowski, Jones had an assist-to-turnover ratio of 7.35 last season, [the] highest of any player in a season since individual turnovers were first tracked in 1977-78, per ESPN Stats & Info. In that span, Jones has the three highest marks in a season — 7.04 in ’21-22 and 6.96 in ’18-19. The Suns landed a significant solution at the point guard position in their signing of Jones. He previously played for the Minnesota Timberwolves, Memphis Grizzlies, and Washington Wizards. He was first drafted 24th overall by the Cleveland Cavaliers at the 2015 NBA Draft out of Duke University. Read on for further information.

The Lowdown on Tyus Jones

Jones is no longer on the NBA’s free agent market, which is a good thing, as he’s arguably deserving of a new contract. Though he is a short-term solution for the Suns, for the time being, the latter got a steal of the market in the latter. The Suns needed a “true” point guard ahead of the 2024-25 NBA season. The Suns’ turnover issues have affected them greatly, but they’ve arguably locked in a reliable point guard in Jones. Jones’ probable role would be him being a starting point guard, playing alongside their star-studded trio of Devin Booker, Kevin Durant, and Bradley Beal, and helping them make a deeper playoff run.

Tyus Jones’ Career So Far

Tyus Jones isn’t an NBA champion yet, but he became an NCAA champion in 2015 as a freshman college basketball player at Duke. Jones was also named the NCAA Final Four Most Outstanding Player and an AP Honorable Mention All-American in ’15. He attended Apple Valley High School in Apple Valley, Minnesota.

At Apple Valley High School, Jones — a Burnsville, Minnesota, native — was a varsity starting point guard as an eighth grader in 2009-2010. Jones averaged 16.8 points per game and 8.1 assists per game and started every game for a team that went 20-8. As a result, he received his first recruiting letter from USC as a 13-year-old.  After the 2010-11 season, Jones was described as the best point guard from the State of Minnesota since Khalid El-Amin by the Star Tribune based in Minneapolis, Minnesota. Jones has never ceased to amaze the basketball world, whether he played high school, college, or professional basketball.

Tyus Jones’ Most Recent Stats

Before joining the Phoenix Suns, Tyus Jones played one season for the Washington Wizards from 2023-24. He averaged 12.0 points, 2.7 rebounds, and 7.3 assists, along with a 48.9% field goal percentage. He also shot 49% from the field, including 41% from the three-point range. He can be the point guard the Suns desperately need.

Tyus Jones’ Possible Plans in Phoenix

Tyus Jones is set to sign a one-year, $3.3 million deal with the Suns. They expect him to be their new starting point guard in the upcoming season. The team’s next step would likely be to move Grayson Allen to the bench in 2024-25. Only time will tell how the deal pans out and if he is really the future for the Arizona city.
