Phoenix Suns Owner Makes Bold Claim Following 2024 Playoff Sweep

The Phoenix Suns were swept in an embarrassing fashion by an uprising Minnesota Timberwolves team recently. There are several things to blame for why the Suns were swept in the first round.

It could be that they need a facilitator at point guard. It could also be that their big three—Beal, Booker, and Durant—need to build better team chemistry off the court. Maybe they need a better big man to help Jusuf Nurkic in the paint since Kevin Durant plays like a 6’11 guard.

The blame could also be pointed at the second youngest owner in NBA history, Mat Ishbia.

Mat Ishbia told Cameron Cox of NBC 12 News Arizona that he wants to keep the big 3 in Phoenix. Mat told Cameron, “Our starting five is coming back. We just need to make some adjustments.”

The Phoenix Suns’ current starting five are Devin Booker, Grayson Allen, Bradley Beal, Kevin Durant, and Jusuf Nurkic.

What Could The Phoenix Suns Change On Their Roster?

Grayson is the leader in 3-point shooting percentage, but he doesn’t get as many touches as Booker, Beal, or Durant. Their big 3 is composed of three ISOLATION players who aren’t great facilitators. This criticism is similar to when Kyrie joined Luka on the Dallas Mavericks.

Kyrie and Luka are two ball-dominant players. In their first season together, the duo played really well until the fourth quarter and then couldn’t figure out when to let one player be the ball-dominant player in the clutch.  Now, they’re considered as one of the best duos in the league today.

Can A Coaching Change Be Helpful?

The Phoenix Suns got rid of their former coach of the year, Monty Williams, in a confusing move to replace him with Frank Vogel. He still has four seasons left on his five-year contract. It might be too soon to fire the 2020 NBA champion coach.

They also signed James Jones to a multi-year deal as their general manager. He won Executive of the Year in 2021. So it looks like they have to build up the team’s chemistry and find a facilitator for their big 3.
