The Philadelphia Phillies announced a pair of talented hitters have been placed on short-term injured reserve following injuries sustained during Philly’s 7-4 loss to the Miami Marlins yesterday. Kyle Schwarber and Bryce Harper are both expected to miss at least two weeks to start July. With one transaction, Philly loses their top offense producers in 2024 as the pair of stars have combined for over 100 runs batted in (RBI) this season.
The Philadelphia Phillies currently hold the best record in baseball at 53-28, however, there are some critical N.L. East divisional matchups that the star duo will need to sit out. Outfield Johan Rojas returns to the Phillies from a short stay in Triple A. Infielder Cody Clemens will join Rojas on the travel to Philadelphia from Lehigh Valley.
Bryce Harper All-Star Season in Philly
Bryce Harper was elected as a starter in the MLB All-Star game yesterday as a member of the Philadelphia Phillies. Whether he will be healthy enough to appear in Texas on July 15 is way too close to call right now. Harper’s injury list stint would end only be five days before on Wednesday on July 10.
Harper was injured on the final play while sprinting out the final ground ball out of Thursday night’s loss. After hitting first base, the entire Philadelphia area gasped in horror as the Phillies showman reached toward his hamstring hobbling down the first base line.
In 76 games this season, Harper has hit .303 with 58 RBIs over 76 games. Harper’s 20 home runs lead the other individual placed on injured reserve for Philly, Kyle Schwarber (17).
Philadelphia Phillies Will Miss Kyle Schwarber’s Power
After Kyle Schwarber’s addition to the Injured List, Nick Castellanos represents the Phillies’ top remaining power threat heading into July at 11 home runs. That is a significant drop for the power potential available in the Phillies batting order.
Kyle Schwarber was removed from the game against Miami in the eighth inning. Schwarber launched a throw from left field and indicated a lower-body issue afterward.
While Schwarber’s batting average (.250) leaves room for improvement, Kyle still represents a significant part of the Philadelphia offense with 49 RBI. He is once again second to Bryce Harper (58). The downside to Schwarber’s power is the inflated strikeout totals halfway through the season at 103 through 79 games.
Phillies Schedule Could Help With Missing Stars
Heading toward the MLB All-Star break in two weeks, Philadelphia has a difficult stretch of games ahead of them. The Miami Marlins (29-52) took the first game of a three-game series to finish out the month of June. Philadelphia travels to play the Chicago Cubs (38-44) and Atlanta Braves (44-35). After the six-game roadie, the Phillies stay home for a series against the NL West-leading Los Angeles Dodgers (51-31) and Oakland Athletics (29-54).
Out of the five remaining series for the 2024 All-Star Game, three of those MLB squads are significantly under .500. To maintain the top record in baseball, Philly will need to rely heavily on their depth.
