Philadelphia Phillies Pick Up Austin Hays From Orioles

Baltimore Orioles Philadelphia Phillies

With the MLB Trade Deadline near, trades are starting to go down. The Philadelphia Phillies have acquired outfielder Austin Hays from the Baltimore Orioles. In return, Philadelphia sent right-handed reliever Seranthony Dominguez and outfielder Cristian Pache. Don’t be surprised if Philadelphia and Baltimore make more deals ahead of and at the trade deadline.

The Philadelphia Phillies are comfortably ahead in the National League East Division with a 61-41 record. As for the Orioles, they lead the American League East Division at 61-41.  Baltimore has a two-game lead over the New York Yankees. Hays played in 63 games with Baltimore, hitting .255 with three home runs and 14 RBIs. His on-base percentage is .316. Baltimore didn’t have room on its everyday roster for Hays to get in the field. Hopefully, that could change in Philadelphia.

As for the Orioles, getting a reliever helps but they still need bullpen help. Dominguez has a 3-2 record and a 4.75 earned-run average. He appeared in 38 games with one save. In 36 innings, Dominguez allowed 32 hits and 22 runs. Dominguez also walked 12 batters and struck out 40.

Pache played in 50 games this season for the Philadelphia Phillies. He will be a useful glove late in games for Baltimore. He’s hitting .202 with no home runs and nine RBIs. He’s got a .288 on-base percentage with no stolen bases.

Where Do Phillies, Orioles Go From Here

After this trade, it will be interesting to see where the Orioles and the Phillies go from here. Orioles general manager Mike Elias probably isn’t done dealing. They need to keep improving their roster. For Baltimore, its lone prospect that they should not even consider trading is shortstop Jackson Holliday. Samuel Basilio, Coby Mayo, and Connor Norby, though, might be in deals. Pitcher Tarik Skubal of the Detroit Tigers might be on the Phillies’ and the Orioles’ radar. Also, keep an eye on Erick Fedde and Garrett Crochet of the Chicago White Sox.

Why was Austin Hays traded? He was the Orioles’ fifth outfielder on the roster. Anthony Santander, Colton Cowser, Cedric Mullins, and Heston Krejstad were ahead of him. Hays will get more playing time with Philadelphia. Nick Castellanos, Brandon Marsh, and John Rojas are the only outfielders on the roster. Kyle Schwarber is strictly listed as a designated hitter. Bryce Harper has been mainly playing first base.

Seranthony Dominguez also should not be the lone Orioles’ bullpen pickup. Craig Kimbrel has been OK but not great in their bullpen. He has been very shaky. Pache will be the perfect fifth outfielder for Baltimore. The Orioles could still call up Holliday from the minors. He’s been great at Triple-A Norfolk. Also, Philadelphia could trade for another relief pitcher, too. But they should not mess around too much with its current roster.
