Philadelphia Eagles Quarterback Jalen Hurts In Rarefied Air With 2nd Super Bowl

Philadelphia Eagles

Philadelphia Eagles Quarterback Jalen Hurts is in great company with multiple Super Bowl appearances in his first five NFL seasons. Hurts joins a list of seven of the best quarterbacks in league history including Patrick Mahomes, Russell Wilson, Ben Roethlisberger, Tom Brady, Kurt Warner, Troy Aikman, and John Elway. All seven of these quarterbacks should end up in the Hall of Fame. If Hurts can continue on this career trajectory, Canton may come calling years from now.

Hurts lost Super Bowl LVII to the Kansas City Chiefs and will look to avoid being the second quarterback on this list to lose his first two Super Bowl appearances. Elway lost his first two Super Bowls as Denver Broncos quarterback. He would finish his career with back-to-back Super Bowl victories. Hurts will have his chance to exact revenge on the Kansas City Chiefs in a week from now. Will he and the Philadelphia Eagles be able to get the job done?

Philadelphia Eagles Super Bowl Blueprint

The Philadelphia Eagles are slight underdogs in Super Bowl LIX, and Hurts is one of the reasons why. Philadelphia has an all-star team on offense, but their quarterback is seemingly the weakest link. Hurts is more of a supporting piece on the Philadelphia Eagles offense. The unit is powered by Running Back Saquon Barkley. Barkley had one of the best regular seasons for a back in league history and has been just as good in the NFL Playoffs.

Kansas City’s defense, led by Defensive Coordinator Steve Spagnuolo, has been an exemplary unit this season. Spagnuolo will not allow Barkley to wreck the Super Bowl as he has done in the NFC Playoffs. Barkley has averaged nearly 150 yards per game throughout the postseason and is coming off a three touchdown performance against the Washington Commanders.

That recipe will put the Super Bowl LIX winner on the right arm of Hurts. He has struggled at times to pass the ball this season with eight games of under 200 passing yards. Hurts was seemingly called out by star Wide Receiver A.J. Brown late in the regular season. Hurts also said that Head Coach Nick Sirianni let him out of his “straitjacket” in the NFC Championship. All parties have tried downplaying any discussion regarding turmoil on the team. Regardless, things may not be as good as the Eagles would like people to believe in the “City of Brotherly Love.”

Final Thoughts

Hurts will be presented with a golden opportunity to quiet the naysayers next Sunday, some of which may reside in the Philadelphia Eagles locker room. He will not be able to rely on a great running game like he has during the lead-up to the game. The Eagles quarterback was great against the Chiefs a few years ago. Hurts played a strong game in Super Bowl LVII. He accounted for four total touchdowns but committed the game’s only turnover.

The fumble turned into a touchdown by Chiefs Linebacker Nick Bolton. Philadelphia was up 14-7 and driving down the field. Hurts’ fumble changed the trajectory of the game. Fairly or not, it overshadowed Hurts delivering on the sport’s biggest stage. Hurts will need to find success through the air and he has the weapons to do so.

Brown and DeVonta Smith make up arguably the league’s best receiver duo. Tight End Dallas Goedert is also a solid piece in the passing game. He had 60 receiving yards in Super Bowl LVII. The Philadelphia Eagles have a better roster than the Chiefs, but Kansas City has the decided advantage at head coach and quarterback. Championships, regardless of sport, are tilted toward the best coaches and the team with the best single player. Hurts and Sirianni will look to flip the script in New Orleans, Louisiana.
