Philadelphia Eagles’ Offensive Woes: A Look At Snap Counts

The Philadelphia Eagles offense continued to struggle.

The Philadelphia Eagles lost Week 4 against the Tampa Bay Buccaneers, dropping their record to 2-2. Fans left this game wondering what happened as Head Coach Nick Sirianni and Quarterback Jalen Hurts’ performance were on people’s minds. Injuries played a big part in this loss; inefficiencies came from both sides of the ball. Let’s break down some snap counts and see how injuries and inefficiencies contributed to this disappointing game.

Key Players Missing

A big part of the team was absent: A.J. Brown, DeVonta Smith, and Lane Johnson were all sidelined with injuries. Not only did the Philadelphia Eagles miss them on offense, but it felt like they were also missed on defense. It was tough for Jalen Hurts, who got sacked six times. Tough afternoons like that, in general, make it hard to find any kind of rhythm, especially in the passing game. Certainly, not having those big targets, it was a tough afternoon for Hurts, and he wasn’t clicking on all cylinders.

The running game ultimately fell to Saquon Barkley who played 32 snaps without being able to make a difference once the game got out of hand in the fourth quarter. Kenneth Gainwell saw 25 snaps but was unable to impact the game. Rookie Will Shipley saw one snap; thus, there is not much to go around. It did seem the Eagles desperately needed a strong running game to support a disturbing offense, but the offense could not seem to find their rhythm.

Wide Receivers In Trouble

The receiving corps wasn’t much of an improvement. Jahan Dotson was out there on the most snaps of any of the receivers with 49, but he could only manage two catches for 11 yards. Parris Campbell was a bit better with four catches for 17 yards and had the lone receiving touchdown for the Philadelphia Eagles. The rest of the receivers, such as Johnny Wilson and John Ross, didn’t contribute much, which added to problems on offense. The only thing good enough from the side was Dallas Goedert, who caught seven passes for 62 yards.

Problems On the offensive line

Injuries to the offensive line presented many difficulties. Cam Jurgens was held out for several plays due to cramping and had Landon Dickerson replace him at center at times. This shuffle resulted in Hurts facing constant pressure, which contributed to the six sacks. It made it tough for the Philadelphia Eagles to score.

The Eagles also had their issues on defense. Rookie Quinyon Mitchell played all 77 snaps. However, Avonte Maddox struggled in coverage, allowing multiple receptions. Linebacker Nakobe Dean was on the field for 75 snaps but missed five tackles, the most on the team. The defensive issues continued, as the Philadelphia Eagles allowed more than 30 points for the second week in a row.

Missed Opportunities and Miscommunication

The heat in Tampa Bay did not help matters as the team was unable to tackle or cover Tampa’s receivers. The Philadelphia Eagles could have been tighter on their coverage and execution. It was as if miscommunication was the norm for both the offense and defense for the entire game. With miscommunication, this meant that the Buccaneers almost began to pick their pace, which denied the Philadelphia Eagles enough time to regroup and get back to their winning ways.

Looking Ahead

Coming into a bye week is helping. The Philadelphia Eagles just need to target healing from their injuries and mending their performance. It is still very early in the season, and there’s even time to turn things around. If they want to compete for a spot in the playoffs, these problems will need to be cured quickly. The fans will be hoping for a stronger coming week as the team looks to right the ship.
