Philadelphia Eagles’ Defensive Breakdown Starts Up Front

Philadelphia Eagles'

The Philadelphia Eagles lost a competitive game against the Atlanta Falcons. The 22-21 game was marked by major weaknesses on defense. Of course, people were talking about missed plays and dropped passes. As it turned out, the Eagles’ defensive breakdown begins with the front line. The team needs that to improve to win more games this season.

The Philadelphia Eagles’ defensive line had a very bad start to the game. Their defense is mainly supposed to stop runs and limit the quarterback’s production. It did little on these two aspects. Running Backs Bijan Robinson and Tyler Allgeier saw enough openings in them to run to obtain a total of 150 yards on the ground. It becomes very difficult for any defense to win if this happens.

Head Coach Nick Sirianni believed that with the opposing team being out in front on the scoreboard, it makes it much tougher for the defense to pin their ears back and get after the quarterback. The Falcons were able to get into pretty manageable situations much of the game, which made it very favorable to them on offense.

Falcons Quarterback Kirk Cousins had an easy time in the pocket as there was not enough pressure from Philly’s pass rush. He finished 20-of-29 with two touchdowns and led a game-winning drive. The only highlight of that game, at least on the side of the Eagles defense, was when Milton Williams delivered a third-down sack. The biggest issue for the Eagles defense was their high-priced edge rusher, Bryce Huff. He looked invisible in key moments, failing to create chaos for the opposing offense as a supposed cornerstone of the defense.

Forward Movement

As the Eagles head into upcoming games, much is required of them during the preparation process. They need to tighten up their defensive strategies, with the defensive front being one of the most important success factors for the team. Improving their run defense and putting pressure on the quarterback will set the tone for the team.

The Eagles’ breakdown in defense against the Falcons proved there is room for improvement. Key guys are not stepping up for the team and getting no pressure on the quarterback can hamper a defense. The possibility of winning is there and it was right in front of them. With much effort and dedication, they should be able to do it this season. By turning the season around, the Eagles should be able to ensure that the defense should not be a weakness but a strength. They face an undefeated New Orleans Saints team on Sunday.
